Introduction
This book reflects Eddies funny and entertaining way of talking story on his sixty years of experience dealing with Chinese in the United States and in China. Eddie was born in Hong Kong and immigrated to the United States when he was sixteen. He has been very active in the Chinese community in Hawaii, and has extensive business dealings with Chinese in the United States and in China.
This book is written explicitly with China in mind. Most of the customs and traditions may be similar for Chinese in Hong Kong, Taiwan or other countries. However, there are
many differences within China itself. With over 1.34 billion people, many local and regional customs and traditions may vary.
The book focused on some of the key customs and traditions in an exciting and hilarious manner. You will learn many aspects of the Chinese society, travel and business. Each section has an interesting lesson about the Chinese people, a tip on how to deal with them, a did you know? factoid, and finally a cartoon to emphasize the key issue. It is a very easy and amusing reading. This book is invaluable to anyone wanting to travel, to do business, or to understand China in a concise and humorous way.

Chapter 1
History, Geography and Government
A Short Chronological History of China
China has a long recorded history, going back over 5,000 years, making it one of the oldest civilizations in the world. The Chinese are very proud of their culture and history. A brief time-line from the beginning of Chinese civilization to the modern era is chronicled below.
- The Peking man was the earliest human being who lived in Zhoukoudian, a village southwest of Beijing, about 400,000 to 500,000 years ago.
- The Xia dynasty (2100 B.C. 1600 B.C.) was the first dynasty in China. China continued to be ruled by dynasties until the Double Ten revolution, October 10, 1911.
- The Chinese developed skills in farming, silkworm-raising, tool making, construction, and trading between 2100 B.C. to 221 B.C. During this time, Chinese civilization flourished with many thinkers and philosophers such as Confucius.
- The first emperor of the Qin Dynasty, Qin Shih Huang, unified all of the Chinese feudal states in 221 B.C.
- Between 618 and 907, Chinese civilization flourished under the Tang Dynasty by trading with countries all over the world.
- The British started the Opium War against China in 1839. The war ended with the Treaty of Nanjing in 1842, which ushered in a century of unequal treaties. Under the treaty, the island of Hong Kong was ceded to the British in perpetuity and four treaty ports, including Canton and Shanghai, were opened to the British.
- Sun Yat Sen successfully led a revolution to overthrow the Qing Dynasty and established the Republic of China in 1911.
- In 1949, the Chinese Communist Party drove the Nationalist government to Taiwan with Mao Zedong as the Chairman. The United States refused to recognize the Chinese Communist Party as the legitimate government of China and instead supported the Nationalist government in Taiwan.
- China adopted the Four Modernizations agriculture, industry, science and technology, and national defense - set by Deng Xiaoping in 1978, welcoming foreign investments and ushering China into a new era of economic growth.
- The United States officially recognized the Peoples Republic of China as the legitimate government on January 1, 1979 and established a diplomatic relationship.
Tip #1 To understand the Chinese people, you have to understand Chinese history.
