Introduction
Now thatI reached middle-age I comprehend that the male specie is underconsiderable threat since most of us are alone by the time we reachfifty years of age. Our sisters are all married (or in anothertown) and our moms of advanced years or far away and not about tobecome our personal chefs. Many of us lost a wife to God or aredivorced and in no mood to do the dating game again besides beingbroke after the hideous divorce lawyers are finally finished withyou. (A peculiar specie disliked even amongst lawyers). Thereforeyou find yourself alone in the kitchen trying desperately toremember what your wife or mom did whilst you watched television orworked late during the good times.
After all that is the way life usually turns out and your foodpreparation knowledge limited to barbeques on Saturday nights astradition dictates in this country. However, you will soon find outyou cannot live of barbequed meat alone. First it is time consumingand secondly it is boring after a year and henceforth the questionarrived: What do you do when suddenly, after years of being taken care of by your wife you find yourselfalone in the kitchen? Being an educated manI decided to use the tried and tested academic approach by readingthe genuine cookbooks but failed miserably to prepare decent foodfrom them. What went wrong you ask?
I foundwith most genuine cookbooks that they tend to be over elaborativeand the recipes way too difficult to prepare. It is unquestionablywritten for more advanced users than me who do not claim much skillin the kitchen and simply don't understand the instructions to behonest. Most certainly my efforts never looked quite as agreeableas the professionally done pictures in these genuine cook booksmaking you wonder if you are doing it right or feel inferior if youare blessed with a less obnoxious personality than I have. Ofcourse it is written to sell and to sell you need toimpress!
They alsoadd garlic in absolutely every meal which is fine as far as tastegoes (debatable) but no good for me who as a professional man needsto actually talk to his clients face to face now and then sincethey pay me by the minute for that privilege. Thus I am predisposedagainst garlic...however, if you really must, please feel free toadd garlic to everything in this book for it is supposed to behealthy.
* "Of course it is Honey" says my American Patriot who readshere before you do. It must be noted she loves garlic and since Iknow what is good for me so do I these days when she prepares thefood. My poor clients!
Thenthere are the ingredients in the genuine cookbooks which havewonderfully exotic names. Never heard of half of them in my life...so you either walk up and down the aisle searching for it or yougive up all together and go to the local steakhouse or pizza jointin disgust with your lack of knowledge. Or it is from a foreigncountry and unknown in this part of the world by the same name.Being a man, I am not actually that willing to display my ignorancein asking a female assistant for all the ingredients I read in thegenuine cookbooks! Most men agree with this logical perspective andall real men get lost to explore a new route to wherever we want togo! What does a wife know about navigating anyway I ask?
* Apparently a lot actually! My American Patriot is a walkingcompass and never gets lost (only the Air Force pilots do forunknown reasons according to her who works for the U.S. Navy). Doesnot matter where in the world we are she knows her way is the onlyway and after a couple of years of "I told you so Honey" so do Ifor she really never gets lost.
Thenlastly, the quantities / measurements are rather complicated ingenuine cookbooks! Some are in the metric system which I understandup to a point. Others are in Imperial or American, which I willnever understand no matter how hard I try before I find myself inthe local steakhouse. (You would have thought that by now the worldwould agree to one system and get done with but alas, not so. It isa matter of national pride to confuse decent citizens.)
All the above made that the genuine cookbooks are of littlepractical use and only decorate the kitchen wall because I cannotbe bothered to throw them away...they do have nice pictures inthem! If you feel the same way then this down-to-earth cookbook isfor you. None of the recipes herein havemore ingredients than what is really necessary and the ingredientsmust be easy to find in the local supermarket or they will not bein this book. That was the overriding qualification and I stuck toit religiously.
You cantake for granted that this book is not meant to be that healthy orthe next great cookbook and have absolutely nothing in which can beremotely considered "organic." In fact, be warned that most genuinechefs will find it very mediocre for I also use ready-made packetsauces and or soups which I am told is beneath a genuine kitchenexpert to use. Be that as it may, the recipes will keep you alivefor the time being and these sauces came a long way since the1980's.
Anotherimportant qualification was that the recipes must not be overlyfancy! This is about survival until better times and skills arrivewhilst cooking with the minimal pots & pans left to you by thehideous divorce lawyers.
* The next book in the series will be more advanced when youmove on to the dating scene and need to impress your date with yourculinary skills. I am still thinking of it since I am happilymarried and only date my American Patriot who is excellent in thekitchen as with all other aspects of life. Just to be expectedactually since I proved beyond reasonable doubt in one of my other books that one American woman is worth an Empire.
Followingthe above qualifications the recipes contained here are simple andeasy to follow. They are mostly the same (why bother to change whenyou know what works). I tried and tested them for years. Beingtwice divorced and on occasion too broke for take-away food this iswhat I survived on until my American Patriot took over the kitchenduties. That is except on Saturday nights when she is excused fromthe barbeque much to her disgust with our African traditions. May Ialso say that despite the non-professional pictures my foodactually tastes quite nice and no-one died from it yet! This ofcourse not to say I guarantee anything and I take no responsibilityfor your efforts. You have to experiment also and see what worksfor you. I do not claim any special gifts as a chef.
