For me, these are bits of childhoodthe woven tapestry of experiences and memories that comprise the happy moments growing up. Its Sunday mornings with my aunt at the stove, holiday breakfasts lovingly arranged by my mother on the trestle table my uncle built, and sitting outside while my grandfather tended the kettle grill. Its all simple, and yet not at all simple. Food is nourishment. The vitamins, minerals, and nutrients are a puzzle that forms the building blocks of our day. Food fuels our bodies and minds.
But its more than that. I love the adage Food is love, because it is. Creating food for those you care about is nothing short of an act of love. When you knowingly make a favorite food for a loved one, you are saying, I see you. Thats a powerful message. Food is also a conversation starter.
Around the dinner table, we gather to talk about our day over bowls of pasta and platters of chicken. Over a spread of tacos, we might discuss whats in the news, what we have on our to-do lists, or the books were reading. Nestled at the table, I hear about what my kids are learning, the sports they play, playground drama, and life concerns. Food is also ritual. My family has a long-standing tradition of Christmas brunch, served just after the presents are opened but before we all retire to nap, read, and play. Served on brightly colored reindeer plates with chilled glasses of orange juice, its familiar and loaded with foods each of us loves: bagels and lox with all the fixings, chocolate croissants, eggs with bacon and sausage, fruit salad.
But good foodand food ritualsshould not be reserved for special occasions. Good food can be had every day and for every meal we eat. And that good food, created simply, can bring us together, nourish us, and form the fondest memories. Thats what this cookbook is all about. My name is Sarah Walker Caron, and I am a recipe developer, food writer, newspaper editor, magazine editor, college journalism instructor, andimportantlymom to two growing tweens. A typical week in our house includes multiple nights of running to practice for my son, dance class, a Girl Scout meeting, and a sports practice and game for my daughter, and so much more.
Sound busy? It is! Thats why I prefer to cook simple dishes with short ingredient lists and abbreviated cooking times. Thats also why writing this cookbook is important to me. In The Super Easy 5-Ingredient Cookbook, every recipe has five ingredients or fewer and can often be prepared, cooked, and on the table in 30 minutes or less. The recipes in this book reflect how my own family eatswith accessible, everyday ingredients found in many grocery stores. We often start with fresh veggies and fruits, create dishes from scratch, and do it all in as little hands-on time as possible. We use frozen vegetables, and occasionally canned ones (such as canned tomatoes), when it makes sense to do so.
We eat a variety of proteins and have vegetarian meals at least a few nights a week. We eat well, but we dont spend hours cooking. Its the same food point of view I share on my food blog, Sarahs Cucina Bella (www.sarahscucinabella.com). I hope youll dig into this book, try the recipes, learn the techniques, and then adapt them to your own preferences. And I hope youll love the recipes as much as my family does.
