TABLE OF CONTENTS
INTRODUCTION
Welcome and congrats for joining the air frying world. The counter space in most kitchens is a hot commodity for almost all homes. Probably you may have a lot of counter space in your kitchen but you will be surprised how easy it is to fill your kitchen with modern cooking appliances. Having mentioned that, an air fryer is one of the latest cooking appliances that you should create room for. Air fryers function the same are ovens which are available in almost every store near you since they can roast and even bake your favorite foods. With an air fryer in your kitchen, you can prepare super crispy foods in no time with less oil compared to deep frying. Typically, an air fryer usually heats up very fast and this makes your food cook quickly and evenly thanks to the powerful heat source and fan.
Nowadays, many people are becoming cautious about their health especially when it comes to the food they consume. They are shunning away from unhealthy eating habits by mainly consuming foods with less oil content. Deep fried foods are known to contain large amounts of oil and this makes them unsafe when consumed in huge amounts. According to numerous research done by food experts, consuming foods fried with unstable oils can have a negative impact on your well-being. For instance, if you eat deep fried foods such as French fries regularly, there is a higher chance of developing diseases like heart disease, obesity, and diabetes. You can avoid the risk of developing these diseases by substituting deep fried foods with air fried ones.
Air frying does not involve submerging food in oil unlike deep frying. An air fryer cooks food by circulating hot air at high speeds to produce a crispy outer layer through browning reactions. Besides, very little or no cooking oil is used when air frying. Therefore, it means that you can use an air fryer to prepare crispy and chewy foods that people love without much oil.
Does air fried food taste the same as deep fried food? The answer to this is subjective. When you deep fry, the food usually absorbs the cooking oil used to cook it. This makes the food crunchy outside and while moist inside. Besides, deep frying makes the food have a rich dark color that catches the eye. When it comes to air frying, you will still get a crunch although the mouthfeel and the appearance will not be the same as deep frying. Both oil frying and air frying foods will lead to a similar color but will have different sensory qualities and textures.
WHAT IS AN AIR FRYER?
An air fryer is a common kitchen appliance that is similar to an oven but the main difference is that its heating elements are located at the top along with a large fan. In other words, an air fryer is a small oven that has a highly concentrated heating element and a powerful fan that circulates hot air around your favorite food such as chicken wings and veggies. Another thing you should keep in mind is that this kitchen appliance can cook food with very little or zero oil.
An air fryer can be used to cook various types of food that would fry in oil such as pizza, fish, doughnuts, veggies, chicken, onion rings and much more. Its important to know that most meats will require no added cooking oil because they are already juicy. You will just need to add salt to taste and then season with your desired spices and herbs. Another thing you should keep in mind is that, ensure you use dry seasonings. The reason for this is that less moisture will eventually result in crispier results. Nonetheless, if you are one of those cooks who loves basting your favorite meats with honey or barbecue sauce, just wait until the last few minutes of cooking.
If using an air fryer to cook lean meats or other types of food with very little or zero fat, you will need to add a little amount of oil so as to brown and crisp up. For example, you can brush pork chops or chicken breasts with some oil prior to seasoning. Its recommended that you use canola oil or vegetable oil because they have a higher smoking point. If air frying veggies such as Brussels sprouts, broccoli florets, or potato halves, you should first toss them in oil. Also, remember to drizzle a bit of salt prior to air frying.
You will notice that some models available in the stores also have bake and toast settings. Such models make them more like the traditional ovens. Therefore, you can use the aforementioned settings to roast chicken wings or bake brownies. Unfortunately, most of these appliances often have limited basket size and makes it a little bit hard to cook for your entire family in a single go.
HOW DOES THE AIR FRYER WORK?
An air fryer usually has a heating element at the top section of the cooking chamber accompanied by a powerful fan that circulates superheated air. The heating element of the appliance is usually powered by an electric current. Once you switch on your air fryer, the heating element heats the air inside the cooking chamber to very high temperatures such as 320 F, and then the fan circulates the superheated air around your food to form a crunchy exterior. The hot air moves in a circular motion ensuring that it comes into contact with the surface of the food. The air fryer has a perforated basket that enhances the circulation of air.
According to researches, it is stated that air fryers usually use superheated air that has fine oil droplets to remove moisture from food. The result of this is a product with similar attributes to deep fried foods but with lower fat content. Air frying usually initiates a chemical reaction known as the Maillard reaction that gives foods their distinctive flavor and color.
Generally, an air fryer has three components: the basket base, air fryer base, and the basket. The main component of an air fryer is the air fryer base. The basket base usually holds the basket and it is located at the bottom of the appliance. The basket base is meant to hold the crumbs and oil that slip through the perforated basket. Moreover, the basket normally holds the food and it is attached to the base. The basket usually has a mesh base or round holes in almost all brands and models. Both the basket and the basket base are easy to clean and they are dishwasher safe. In addition, some air fryer brands come with other items such as a double grill layer, baking tin, and divider.
Below are steps on how to use your air fryer:
  1. Transfer the food you want to cook into the basket. You may want to add one to two teaspoons of cooking oil to some kinds of food to achieve crispy results.
  2. Set the temperature and the time as stated in the recipe. Depending on the food you are preparing, the temperature and times range from 350 F to 400 F and five to twenty-five minutes respectively. Cooking some types of food calls for flipping when halfway through the cooking period to produce great results.
