Introduction

Air fryers is a popular innovation that can deliver that crispy, golden-brown crunch you're always craving without using much oil.

Here's how they work.

So let's get one thing out of the way: when you're cooking with an air fryer, you're not actually frying anything. Instead, these devices are essentially countertop convection ovens that cook food with electric heat that's circulated by high-powered fans. It's the air, created by the machine's fan, that keeps the surface of the food being cooked dry, resulting in an extra-crispy exterior and a fluffy or moist interior that's reminiscent of the results of deep-frying.

Benefits of Air Fryer

The Air fryer makes it possible to enjoy healthier versions of your favorite foods by frying them with a tablespoon or less of oil and draining excess fat during cooking. Rapid Air technology circulates air around the entire unit, food becomes crispy on the outside and tender on the inside with little to no oil.Tthe Air fryer can do more than just fry. It can also grill, roast, and even bake your food, so you have more options when feeding your family or entertaining guests. You can create everything from delicious cakes to tasty fried chicken.

If youre looking to lose weight or lower your fat intake without modifying or cutting down on fried foods, switching to an air fryer may be a good choice.

Cook More Than Just Fries

Air fryers are great at roasting veggies. But you can also whip up desserts like cakes, cookies and pies. If you can bake it in the oven, you can make it in the air fryer but at 30 degrees lower temperature and in half the time.

Breaded foods are by far the most successful things to cook in an air fryer. I tested both homemade chicken nuggets coated with traditional flour, egg and panko breading as well as frozen chicken nuggets straight from the bag. Both versions cooked up to a remarkably crunchy finish in less than 15 minutes. The homemade chicken nuggets remained moist and tender inside their crunchy coating. It's impressive.

Air Fryer Accesories

A basket-type hot air fryer is a dedicated air-frying machine in which the food is cooked in a basket.

The basket usually has a handle for easy tossing of the food at one or more intervals during cooking.

There are at least four main differences between basket-type air fryers, and paddle-type air fryers:

  • Basket-type usually require intervention from you during the cooking process at intervals depending on what you are cooking. Paddle-type generally do not as they turn the fries themselves;
  • Paddle-type can do liquid dishes such as risotto and curries;
  • Basket-type are gentler with battered and coated foods such as onion rings and home-battered foods,etc. Paddle-type can rip the coating off (though special trays are available for some models)
  • Basket-type have fewer moving parts so may prove to have a longer life span, depending on the make.

Some people say a basket-type air fryer is basically a convection oven with a high-powered blower, and a basket. On most models, the air flows inside are actually designed to mimic the flow of oil in a deep-fryer, so there is a fundamental difference.

Note that almost all models so far seem to use an upper heating element as the heat source. One or two, though, use halogen bulbs as the heat source. If you purchase a halogen-powered one, be sure to enquire thoroughly first what you do when the bulb burns out some makers hard-wire them in so that burnt out bulbs are not replaceable.
