Chapter1

Kevin dreamt of her.

He awoke gasping for air, and shot up from the bed. For the first few seconds he was

disoriented, as he fought to remember how to breathe; his forehead beaded with sweat, and his hands clutching the sheets for dear life.

His heart felt as though it had collapsed, and as the waves of fear lingered tauntingly around him, he lifted his eyes to the bright array of city lights beyond the floor length windows of his bedroom.

The room was dark, and the memories of his nightmare hazy, but underlying it all was the unmistakable throb of ecstasy that coursed through his body.

Who was she?

What was this?

He shut his eyes against the frustration of wanting to drive his fist into anything. He couldnt even make out her face! All he felt was her touch and her breath everywhere... all over his body... all at once.

And his heart wanted to burst. But then he would awake and all he could feel was panic. At what? He could not tell.

Furious, he jerked the sheets away, and strode over to the windows. He was hard, and for the first few seconds he just stared down at his body, and listened to his still furiously pounding heart. He had only started receiving the threats a few months back, but hed been tormented by these dreams for the last four years.

At first it had come occasionally and had been peculiar but easy to ignore. However, its

frequency in recent times had now become downright disruptive to his peace of mind. He felt possessed. After giving it a few more thoughts, he called his doctor and was scheduled for an appointment later in the day.

Sleep deserted him afterwards so he began his day, and as it wore on, his mind remained on the scheduled doctors visit.

Just after midday however, a bomb was dropped on top of his desk. He read and reread the handwritten letter that had been delivered to his office, and for the longest time just gazed ahead in confusion.

We have a son together the note read. I have been trying for weeks to get a hold of you without luck, so I hope that this will get your attention. For proof, I need not say any more than my knowledge of the burn scar in your inner thigh. I will await your response.

Kevin knew that he was supposed to find this amusing, but for some reason he stopped his assistant, Mark, just before he left the office.

Who delivered this?

Kerry said a woman left it at the reception a few hours ago

Find her. he ordered. I want her here within the hour.

It was as he had demanded, and barely half an hour later, a woman with the most nervous eyes that he had ever seen was seated before him. Her dark curly hair was all over the place, and her hands hidden beneath her thighs.

What is your name? he asked quietly, and for the first time since she had walked into the room, she met his eyes. He heard her exhale, and watched with bated breath as she opened her mouth to speak.

Breanna, she answered. Breanna Webb.

Her voice was soft, but it was firm, and it all made him wonder about her even more. He could see that she was nervous, but the determination in her eyes however, he could not miss. She was here for something, and he couldnt wait to hear what she had to say.

Settling even further into his chair, he folded his hands across his chest and watched her closely.

I saw your letter, he said, and couldnt help the accompanying huff of amusement. we have a child together?

A- a son. she responded, and he cocked his head in genuine wonder at her.

And when did you have this child?

Five years ago. she replied, and he sat up, his interest the most spiked that it had been in years.

Five years ago? he repeated.

She nodded.

Then why are you just contacting me now?

She said nothing.

I don't remember sleeping with you. I don't even think weve ever met.

You wont remember. she said. You were drunk.

He felt a smile spread across his face. You took advantage of me?

She reacted as though he had insulted her. Of course not! She sat up, and was close to jumping out of her seat, her gaze now unashamedly holding his. He wished that he had more time to enjoy this play, but the hectic engagements still awaiting him kept him in check.

So where is this child? he asked.

He is with me.

Do I not get the chance to conduct a DNA test?

You can she replied. I mean you will. B-but first theres something you have to address.

Here it comes he thought to himself.

He sat up, and with his chin supported by his hands glued his gaze on the fearless woman before him. Whether she was fearless or just insane, however, he could not wait to find out.

Breanna was out of her mind.

She couldnt believe that she was seated here before him, and announcing the existence of their child together in this way. The almost immediate response to make her way over to the companys headquarters had shocked her, but then after the bolt had worn off, her heart had threatened to break with sadness. Shed had to make a decision; do what she presently had to save her father, and in exchange, throw away the seed of possibility for the future that she had dared to dream of at the very back of her mind, or ignore the invitation, and act as though she had never succumbed to desperation and sought him out. She had chosen the former.

It was now too late for everything, and she wanted to wail out her fury. She kept herself in check however, and held the weary and forlorn face of her father, the only man she loved more than the one that was currently seated before her, in mind.

The meeting was being held in his office in downtown Boston, and it was as grand as she had imagined. Nothing less was to be expected of the billionaire heir to Horton pharmaceuticals, and the reminder of how insignificant she was compared to all of this, strangely strengthened her resolve.
