Gold. Element number 79 on the chemist's periodic table, gold is a heavy, malleable metal that can be found in its free state either as dust or nuggets, or embedded in quartz lodes. Gold is a remarkable mineral, but its most remarkable quality is what it does to people. For thousands of years, in cultures around the world, gold has been coveted, valued, cherished. It was gold, for instance, that drove Cortez and Pizarro to conquer the Aztec and Inca civilizations; it was gold that drove tens of thousands of Forty-niners to California's mother lode; it was gold or the lack of it that drove William Jennings Bryan to cry out that "you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold"; and it was gold that caused more than 100,000 adventures from around the world, including William Shape and his companions, to leave home and family and strike out for the Klondike in 1897 and 1898. Perhaps Robert Service, the "Bard of the Klondike," put it best when he wrote:
