Lawrence J. Denniss intellectual biography of John L. Childs, a leading figure in twentieth-century American educational philosophy between 1930 and 1960, traces Childss influence not only on education but also on midcentury politics, economics, and social issues. A disciple of John Dewey and an associate of William Heard Kilpatrick, George S. Counts, Boyd Bode, and other key figures in modern American education, Childs laid the philosophic basis for social reconstruction and became an important contributor to and interpreter of pragmatism as a philosophy of education.Dennis describes how the Christian beliefs so central to Childs as a youth led him as a young man into a decade of YMCA missionary work in China. When he returned to the United States, Childs studied with John Dewey, later coauthoring two chapters of a book with him. Though Childs became a recognized expert on Deweys educational theory, he eventually became more of a reconstructionist than his mentor.Dennis carefully recounts Childss long association with Dewey as well as his political activities in the American Labor Party, the Liberal Party, and the American Federation of Teachers. He likewise traces the debate about metaphysics, democracy, and indoctrination that ensued among the foremost pragmatists of the day.

"The most valuable time for a professor is uninterrupted time," a friend said to me the other day. And it was during the uninterrupted time of a sabbatical that I was able to write this book, which was revised, checked, and reworked with difficulty when my time was once more interrupted. My sabbatical turned out to be a time of creation and recreation. For work I went to New York, Madison, and Rockford; for pleasure I went to Italy, where the wonders of the Veneto were revealed to me for the first time. I don't think there is any moral to be drawn, but my experience with all has been immeasurably enriched.
I want to thank those who helped me with this manuscript. It was all made possible by the good offices of the late Mr. Cliff Childs and Ms. Pamela Fox, John Childs' lawyer. I

received helpful family information from David and James Donald Childs, Mildred Smith, and Ethel Hoffman. Several students and colleagues of John Childs took the time to reminisce: Professors Donald Arnstine, John Broyer, Raymond E. Callahan, Arthur E. Lean, Robert E. Mason, Cho-Ye To. Reverend Edwin Hunt and several of the staff at Wesley Willows Retirement Community, Rockford, Illinois, generously provided me with information. My friends Donald L. Beggs and William Edward Eaton, respectively my dean and departmental chair, and John A. Beineke were ever supportive.
