Preface
If Erwin Schrdinger's only contribution to physics were wave mechanics, a study of the development of his thought which culminated in this great discovery would still be of interest. But Schrdinger did far more than further our comprehension of nature at the atomic level. In a profound way he challenged physicists to think more deeply about quantum mechanics, that highly successful yet disturbing theory of atomic and nuclear systems of which his wave mechanics is an important expression. Although not many physicists agree with his insistence on the continuous aspects of the theory as against the discrete or energy-level aspects, we are all indebted to his profound questioning.
Even more, his lucid insights into almost every branch of physics, as well as into the epistemological questions of how we arrive at our understanding of the physical world, are a challenge to all serious students.
Erwin Schrdinger went beyond questions of the objective world of physics to ask himself the most profound and existential question of allWho am I? He sought clues to the nature of the self, both in the content of scientific observations about the physical and biological worlds, e.g., in discussing freedom and determinism and in thinking of man as knower. Man is part of the world he studies; in Schrdinger's view, man's science is at bottom a kind of self-knowledge.
Such is the breadth and complexity of Schrdinger's scholarship that to present a complete account of his life and thought would be a major undertaking. As a modest introduction I have tried to present here a connected account of a considerable portion of his work. I have selected the several areas of atomic and statistical physics that led up to wave mechanics, the famous theory itself, and the later developmental and

critical work that is related to it. I have also included a brief biography, an account of most of his nontechnical writing, and a bibliography of his work. An outline of the many areas in which Schrdinger wrote is to be found in the first chapter. My sources have been his published writings, and I have not attempted to incorporate the wealth of private papers and recorded interviews that are just now becoming available through the efforts of the joint project of the American Physical and Philosophical Societies, Sources for History of Quantum Physics. I hope that the present work will assist in later efforts to combine both the published and unpublished sources into a definitive account.
The book is primarily written for physicists, physics students, and philosophers of science who have had some introduction to the theories of statistical physics and wave mechanics, but at least Chapters I and V may be of interest to the general reader who wishes to know more about Schrdinger's life and world view.
The writing of this book was prompted by a suggestion made by Professor Henry Margenau during my sabbatical year at Yale University, 195960. I was intrigued by the possibility of dealing with interpretive questions in quantum mechanics along the lines of Margenau's work.Hence came the proposal to investigate Schrdinger's interpretation of wave mechanics and to look into his philosophical and other nontechnical writings.
The work was completed with the assistance of a grant from the National Science Foundation which enabled me to spend two additional summers at Yale. There I had the continued assistance and encouragement of Henry Margenau, the use of the facilities of the Yale Library, and the hospitality of the department of physics. My heartfelt thanks are due Professor Margenau, Yale University, and the National Science Foundation for this privilege.
I also wish to express my gratitude to the National Science Foundation for the Science Faculty Fellowship which supported me for six months in 1960 and to my children Jennifer and Christopher for their assistance in correlating bibliographic references. I greatly appreciate the kind efforts of Professor Michael Polanyi of Oxford, who read my work critically, and the many helpful suggestions of Professor Erling Skorpen of the University of Nevada on the content of the last chapter. Any weaknesses or inaccuracies remaining in the book are, of course, my own responsibility. To Mrs. Steven Kaylor go my thanks for assistance with the typing. Lastly, I wish to acknowledge the most valuable and en-

couraging assistance of my wife, Ann, who is largely responsible for whatever clarity and facility are shown by the writing, especially in Chapters I and V. Without her help it is doubtful whether this book could have been brought to satisfactory completion.
