On May 1, 1951, a legend was born. Newly acquired Orestes Minoso, the first black to play major league baseball in the City of Chicago, stepped into the batters box for his first turn at bat in a Chicago White Sox uniform. Minnie tells of his boyhood in the sugar fields of Cuba, racial discrimination in Cuban society, and feelings of be- trayal upon being traded from the Cleveland Indians to the Chicago White Sox in 1951.

This past summer I was fortunate enough to have been cast in the Glenview Theater Guild's production of "Brigadoon." This lovely Lerner and Lowe musical is about a mythical Scottish village and its townspeople who come alive only one day each century for a bittersweet festival of neighborly fun. I mention this because our director reminded us that the underlying theme of the story centers around a five letter word called "faith."
Faith is precisely what brought this project together. The faith between a writer, a subject and a publisher that the true story of a remarkable human being named Orestes Minoso could reach a large and interested readership. It is a deserving story about a deserving man. The story of an incredible athlete, professional baseball's only six-decade player, who loves the game today with the same verve and passion he did as a young boy growing up in the sugar fields of his native Cuba nearly 70 years ago. But there is so much more. It is a story of love and hardship, of challenge and triumph. It is the complete story of a man, his life and his times. It is a story whose time has come to tell.
No list of acknowledgments would be complete without mentioning a debt of gratitude to John Wasylik, Minnie Minoso's agent. A chance meeting and introduction at our barbershop was the spark which got the process going. His faith and certainty that I was the best person to write the Minnie Minoso storya story that others wanted to writeis an honor I'll never forget.
