Acknowledgments
The author gives thanks to all the people who have been part of Joe Paterno's saga for just being there. All of Joe's friends, assistant coaches and administrative staff individually and together contributed to the events that have led to his success.
I'm also very thankful to Sagamore Publishing for giving me an opportunity to tell my story. The suggestions and editing skills of Mike Pearson and Susan McKinney helped me learn a new craft.
The entire PSU Sports Information Department; Bud Thalman, Jeff Nelson, Frank Giardenia and their staff, happily provided dates and statistics.
When I was discouraged, an old Pt. Washington nice guy, Paul Nussolese, prodded me on to tell people what Joe meant to him.
I am especially indebted to my former pupil, dear friend John Dockery and his wife, Ann, whose endorsement encouraged me to finish the book and seek a publisher. My thanks to Ann Fitzgerald who devotedly transcribed my tapes and assembled all the data for the manuscript.
To everyone, thank you.

Preface
Many people have asked me why I wrote this book. My answer would have to be that I had a story to tell that I felt poignantly relates to the average American family.
Both Joe and I were fortunate to have a wonderful and understanding father. My book is a family continuum to the speech he made in 1945 as Director of Interfaith Movement Inc. Dad's following speech is the format that became seminal to the character of Joe Paterno and what he stands for and has tried to achieve through football.
