Never have I had greater respect for soldiers than those of the 14th Army who served under Bill Slim, and in particular those guys who were in the Chindit columns. They suffered hugely as they got inside enemy territory in the Burmese Jungle and as they fought against all odds; some surviving, some being captured and many dying. This book exemplifies the courage of the men who faced this ordeal. - The Rt. Hon. Colonel Bob Stewart DSO MP
No-one meeting Frank Berkovitch, a quiet, reserved tailor, could have guessed that he had served with the Chindits in Burma and suffered prolonged Japanese captivity. Yet not only had he fought as a Bren-gunner on Operation LONGCLOTH, their first deep penetration mission, but he was the legendary General Orde Wingates batman.
The Chindits were Wingates inspired idea and, while suffering heavy losses from enemy action and deprivation, they dispelled the myth that the Imperial Japanese Army was invincible. Outnumbered, outgunned, carrying 70lb packs and reliant on RAF air drops for supplies, the 3,000 men of the Chindit columns overcame harsh jungle terrain and climatic conditions to take the fight to the enemy behind their own lines.
They wreaked havoc with enemy communications and caused heavy enemy casualties while gathering vital intelligence. After months of malnutrition and disease and hunted by the vengeful Japanese, the survivors faced a desperate race to escape from Burma. Captured crossing the Irrawaddy river, Frank endured two years imprisonment at the hands of notoriously cruel captors.
Superbly researched, this inspiring book vividly describes the Chindits first operation and the hardship suffered by, and heroism of, Frank and his comrades, many who never returned.

A t the time I write this note of thanks to the many people who have helped and encouraged me, Myanmar, the enigmatic country at the heart of this story, is suffering. When I travelled to Myanmar in 2017, a fragile democracy had just been born and Burmese citizens had a say in their countrys governance after decades of military rule. It was sadly short-lived. On 1 February 2021 the people of Myanmar woke to find that the military had seized control in a coup. Democratic leaders were arrested and, in the coming days, dozens were killed in demonstrations.
This book would not have been possible without the help of so many people in Myanmar who answered my questions, opened their homes to me and shared their stories: my knowledgeable guides Ko Soe Win and Myo Myo who opened doors and found paths; U Myo Myint and the people of Inywa; U Chow and the villagers in Waw; the family in Shwebo; Nyo Ko Naing in Katha; and a wonderful teacher, Serena Flock, who approached me, asked if I was British and spent the day showing me around Pyin Oo Lwin. So many gave up their time for me and it is my profound hope that when I return, it will be to a full democracy.
In India, my thanks go to my guide and friend Hemant Goswami who brought the past to life and explained the present as he took me and my dad through the jungles and forts where the Chindits were born, to Dr Jain of Saugar University, and Abishek Akash who took us to the Garrison Church and the forests of Patharia.
The first book I read that mentioned Frank was published by Pen & Sword, and I was delighted when they agreed to publish my book. My thanks go to Henry Wilson who knows what it is to soldier in the jungle for his advice and support, to my editor Pamela Hawkeye Covey and to all the team at Pen & Sword.
I am very grateful to my friends Deborah Britstone (the best colleague I could ask for) and Richard Chapman QC for their support and for working through my drafts and giving me feedback and ideas, and a big thanks to the many friends who encouraged me to put pen to paper and tell Franks story.
There are a number of former soldiers I would like to thank. First, I am very grateful to Colonel Richard Kemp, a man who has been a great inspiration to me, for writing the Foreword to this book. My grandfather suffered all his life after the war from psychological trauma. I was determined that some good should come from his suffering. James Deegan, former Regimental Sergeant Major of the Special Air Service the most elite of all Special Forces kindly made enquiries for me and recommended Billy MacLeod and the inspirational team at Veterans in Action as a charity for royalties from print sales of this book to support. The work done by VIA is humbling and greatly needed, and my thanks go to Billy and his team and all who purchase this book and help their work.
Captured Behind Japanese Lines is a history I share with my brothers Richard and Steven and my thanks go to them for listening to my ideas, and to my dad, Tony, for sharing in my journey and my mum, Anne, for letting him, much as she worried. I also need to thank my mum for the years spent pleading with me to do my English homework essays; it probably paid off.
This is a story I am glad my children Millie and Tal now know. As I researched and wrote about the horrific experiences faced by my grandfather, I know that they are part of my life and part of this world because of his fortitude.
I have been encouraged and supported every step of the way by my wife, soul mate and best friend Carmel. Like the heroes in this book, she has taken that step forward and volunteered as a soldier. She continues to inspire me every day.
My special thanks go to Stephen Fogden. Stephens grandfather Arthur Leslie Howney was a Chindit who was captured and died in Rangoon. In the many years he has spent researching the grandfather he never met, Stephen has collected stories, documents, memories and information about hundreds of other Chindits. Stephens generosity with his time, that most precious commodity, his commitment to sharing knowledge and helping descendants of Chindits has allowed me to find out more than I ever hoped for about Frank. He checked my manuscript, advised me on travel destinations and helped me to research. Above all, he keeps alive the memory of the courageous men of the Chindits.
