INTRODUCTION
What do you think of when you hear the name Ulysses S. Grant? A few facts may come to mind: that he was a general during the Civil War, that he was president of the United States, or that his face is on the fifty-dollar bill. Others are likely to think of things they have been told about him: that he was a drunk, that he was a butcher, or that he was a corrupt president.
In this volume, the authors will present facts about Grant to help you get to know who he actually was. The first chapter gives you an overview of his life, from humble birth to tragic death. The remaining chapters highlight moments in his life that will help you understand more about the character of the man and get beyond the legends and myths about this fabled American general and president. You will have a chance to learn about his early life and his struggles in college. You will also learn about his friendship with other American icons like Mark Twain and Abraham Lincoln, the latter urging him at one point in the Civil War to Hold on with a bulldog grip. This book explores rumors about his drinking and examines the realities of his military career and presidency. It also discusses how Grant went from being a slaveholder to being one of the most aggressive proponents of African American civil rights in his era. You will even have a chance to learn about the fascinating connections between Ulysses S. Grant and Stephen D. Lee, the first president of Mississippi State University, which foreshadowed the eventual relationship between the university and the Grant Presidential Library.
One of Grants nineteenth-century critics once remarked after getting to know him that My whole opinion of old USG has changed wonderfully I can see now how he had friends who stuck to him through thick and thin. In Grants day, those who got to know him found things about him that they appreciated. The authors hope that you will find in this book a new appreciation of his tragic and triumphant story.
ONE
BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH OF ULYSSES S. GRANT
Picture 4
In Washington, DC, directly in front of the United States Capitol and overlooking the National Mall, stands a huge equestrian statue. The man atop the horse has been afforded a position of honor among the many monuments to Founding Fathers and American icons like Washington and Jefferson. Who is this man? He is Ulysses S. Grant, the Civil War general and Reconstruction president who was adored by people all over the world during his lifetime, but who has also been belittled by subsequent generations as a drunk, a butcher on the battlefield, and a corrupt politician. So, then, what is the truth? Grant began as a humble boy growing up on the American frontier and ended with the entire nationboth North and Southgrieving his death. This chapter provides an overview of his life story and highlights the themes and events in his life that will be explored in greater detail in the chapters to follow.
Born in 1822, Grant, nicknamed Ulys, was not wealthy. His father, Jesse, was a tanner by profession and provided a comfortable life for his family. Ulys, the oldest of six children, worked in the tannery, but he hated the experience, tolerating, as best he could, the smells and slaughter of the animals whose hides were turned into leather products.
Ulys preferred to work on his fathers lands. He drove wagon loads of lumber to sites around the area and also learned to tend the plow. He soon realized that horses made his life easier, and he quickly developed a talent for working with them.
As a child, he had a bad experience with a neighbor over a horse. It seemed that the eight-year-old Grant wanted to own a colt that belonged to a neighbor, one Robert Ralston. Grants father had offered to buy the horse for $20, but Ralston insisted on $25, which Jesse Grant thought was too expensive. Ulys pleaded with his father to allow him to buy the horse for $25. Jesse said the horse was only worth $20, but then he yielded to his sons requests. He demanded one condition, however. Ulys was to offer $20 for the horse and raise it to $22.50 and $25 only if necessary. Grant agreed.
