Richard Stevenson is a freelance writer, specialising in military history. He was awarded the 2012 Howard Browne medal by the Victorian Military Society.
Beatson was a well-known soldier in his day and his was a Victorian life of extraordinary adventure, very much on the model of a G. A. Henty hero, but more remarkable, indeed, larger than life. Beatsons speciality was raising and commanding irregular troops, an activity which required charisma, imagination, enterprise and not a small quantity of chutzpah.
