ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
This book would not be possible without the thoughtful research and writing and editing of Susan Black, a professional with remarkable talent. Ms. Black has developed every chapter. Special thanks to Joan Avagliano, also an individual of remarkable talent. It has been my privilege to work with Ms. Black and Ms. Avagliano for more than thirty years.
Robert Laird, whom I have worked for nearly twenty years and to whom this book is dedicated, did a masterful job bringing the entire book into focus.
My wife, Jan, a painter of some caliber who took time from this pursuit to help encourage me and to offer advice on nearly every individual treated, deserves high praise.
Michaela Hamilton, executive editor at Kensington, the female Maxwell Perkins, is a great champion and supporter of good writing, and it is a privilege to work with her. Special thanks to the staff of the Canby Public Library in Canby, Oregon; Anthony F. Quiles-Roche, who works tirelessly to raise the bar for all around him; Francine Benedetti and Nataliya Lustig, who helped keep me on track to complete the project.
So many friends who brought individuals to my attention that clearly set a path in their early days and made a mark on the world, including Rainer Gut, Angela Riley, Scott Freidheim, Kiera Parrott, Brian Moran, Marcy Syms, Lee Miringoff, Joe Wright, Saundra Cowen, Catherine Kinney, Ernie Anastos, Leora Levy, Lee Miringoff, and Phillip Muhr.
Of course, my family gave me the inspiration and conviction to write and finish this book: my sons, Geoffrey and Peter; my brother, Jack; my sisters, Mary Shay and Martha Doughty.

EPILOGUE
S O THERE YOU HAVE IT : twenty-five men and women who used a variety of strategies to rise out of difficult personal circumstances, overcome great obstacles, defy their critics, and attain successin other words, to nail it.
In almost every case these men and women took prudent risks, were oblivious to criticism, and exercised a laser-like focus on their objectives.
Remember E DITH P IAF , who was abandoned as a child, grew up under the most devastating of circumstances, but poured her heart and soul into her singing and became an international star.
Take inspiration from J ACKIE R OBINSON , who was called upon to break through a seemingly impenetrable racial barrier and, on the advice of his mentor, B RANCH R ICKEY , kept his cool in the face of taunts and threats to make history.
Think of R OBERTO M ARINHO , who, while still in his early twenties, had enormous expectations thrust upon him as the heir to his fathers business but showed the patience and determination to learn his craft and rose to a position of national influence.
Look to M AYA A NGELOU , who endured hardships and dislocations in her childhood and was abused and raped as a teenager, but found the spirit to turn her sufferings into prose and poetry that moved the nation.
Can you do the kind of things they did? Can you, like them, measure up to the challenges you face and achieve the goals that will make your life what you want it to be?
Of course you can! Just set your objective and think in specific terms about what it will take to get there. Then stay on track. Put every distraction and temptation aside no matter how attractive it be at the time.
Is there a benefit to doing this? You bet there is. The world is full of timid souls and idle dreamers who never really go after what they want. Dont be one of them. Work to stand out and use the lessons youve learned from this book. If you take that approach and stick with it, it will change your life for the better.
Now, go out there and nail it.

WOLFGANG AMADEUS MOZART (Austria)
U NEMPLOYED ! Y OU WERE OFF TO A GOOD START in your career, even enjoying some early recognition. And then you were fired and had to start over. Sound familiar?
Thats what happened to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, who was 25 when he lost his job. He picked himself up and started over successfully, only to taste failure and success again and again. It was a relentless cycle. Then he died. He was 35.
Lest this is all too demoralizing, consider that the man I just described is known and admired today, some 250 years after his time, as possibly the greatest composer who ever lived. If anything earthly can be considered eternal, it is Mozarts music.
Despite the many setbacks, as the great twentieth-century composer Aaron Copland wrote: What we expect to find in Mozart is perfection in whatever medium he chose to work.
* * *
What a fascinating person Mozart was!
A product of his timeshe was born and died in the waning years of the Holy Roman Empire, which controlled and directed every aspect of Western European life for a millennium.
A child prodigy, mastering many instruments (except the trumpet, whose sound frightened him), composing music and performing in publicto acclaimstarting at age 6.
A son both dutiful and rebellious to a father who home-schooled him and supported his career, and who later opposed his marriage.
A prolific adult, composing with speed and excellence in every musical genre: concertos, operas, symphonies, choral and chamber music, sonatas.
A popular concertizer and conductor.
A denizen of royal and religious settings who knew how to align with powerful patrons.
An ambitious and energetic man subject to depression, perhaps bipolar.
A rebel, a spendthrift, a figure of tragedy who endured the deaths of many family members.
And with all this, what a relatable person he was! Lets consider his life, his work, and his gifts to the world.
* * *
Mozart was born in Salzburg, Austria, on January 27, 1756. He was the youngest child of seven, five of whom had died in infancy. His mother Anna Marias labor was difficult. Her baby was delicate and not expected to live. As an adult, he was robust neither in health nor appearance; various sicknesses plagued him, and he had an almost child-like stature.
