Page ix Acknowledgments Alessandra Strozzi's Letters, despite their great interest, hold pitfalls for the would-be translator, and I have undertaken this task with considerable trepidation. I would like to thank Gene Brucker, who first suggested it to me and who was unfailingly helpful and encouraging during the protracted period over which the translation was prepared. Dale Kent was kind enough to read draft translations of several of the letters when I had just begun the project, and her detailed comments and general observations were very helpful. I would also like to thank Louise George Clubb for specific comments, for her editorial advice, and for her encouragement. F. W. Kent introduced to me the letters of Alessandra Strozzi more than twenty years ago as a likely subject for my Honors dissertation at Monash University, and has given me much help in the research and writing I have undertaken on fifteenth-century Florence in the years since then.
