The Naming of Cats
T. S. Eliot
The Naming of Cats is a difficult matter,
It isnt just one of your holiday games;
You may think at first Im mad as a hatter
When I tell you, a cat must have THREE DIFFERENT NAMES .
First of all, theres the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathon, George or Bill Bailey
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames;
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter
But all of them sensible everyday names.
But I tell you, a cat needs a name thats particular,
A name thats peculiar, and more dignified,
Else how can he keep up his tail perpendicular,
Or spread out his whiskers, or cherish his pride?
Of names of this kind, I can give you a quorum,
Such as Munkustrap, Quaxo, or Coricopat,
Such as Bobbalurina, or else Jellylorum
Names that never belong to more than one cat.
But above and beyond theres still one name left over,
And that is the name that you never will guess;
The name that no human research can discover
But THE CAT HIMSELF KNOWS, and will never confess.
When you notice a cat in profound meditation,
The reason, I tell you, is always the same:
His mind is engaged in the rapt contemplation
Of the thought, of the thought, of the thought of his name:
His ineffable
Effanineffable
Deep and inscrutable singular Name.
Whats in a Name?
Consider yourself a true cat fancier? See if you can match the foreign word for cat with the country it belongs to.

From Cat Woman to Cat Lover
Julie Newmar
H aving been cast as the feline temptress Cat Woman on the Batman TV series, one of my main concerns was that I knew nothing about catshow they acted and reacted, what they were like. If I was going to play Cat Woman, I had to be Cat Woman. I had to learn what cats were all about, which was a switch, having grown up with a wire-haired terrier. As an actress, I believe that everything I do should be from a place of reality, so the more I knew about cats, the better.
My introduction to cats came when I was living in New York in the mid-1960s. June Havoc, sister of Gypsy Rose Lee, lived next to the Actors Studio and had many animals living with her whom she would rescue, protect, harbor, and care for. One day after class she invited me to see her animals, and thats where I met two of her cats. They were two of the most beautiful cats I had ever seen and I ended up adopting them. Since then I have always had two cats.
I did six episodes of Batman and with each appearance I felt I was becoming more catlike, thanks in large part to my two new feline friends and the three thousand or so ballet classes initiated by my mother. Ive actually played a cat more than once in my life. The second time was in a pair of movies called Oblivion and Oblivion II, filmed in 1994. While Cat Woman was considered camp, the new cat role had a more surreal style. Both movies were filmed in Romania.
Julie Newmar with one of her favorite cats
While in Romania, I requested a cat, which the director sent up to my hotel room. I was given a very small kitten. I named her Bird because she was the size of a small bird when she was given to me. Bird was an engaging cat who artfully wangled her way into a small part in the film. She was a slender, beautifully marked, black-and-white cat.
Unpretentious and less affected than most actors, she was well behaved, not nervous, and would even look at the offstage actor in individual close-ups. She was an uncanny scene stealer with her sheer poise and piercing eye contact. I was the nervous one.
