Preface
It is fitting that I begin this book about a forger with a brief discussion of its originality. Any critic of Shakespeare will tell you that a new study of William-Henry Ireland's Shakespeare forgeries has been needed for years. Recent trends in Shakespeare scholarship have made such a study an imperative.
In the last few years a mass of critical studies has reexamined Shakespeare's function in the Enlightenment (including Maria DeGrazia's study, Shakespeare Verbatim (1991), which was wholly devoted to Edmond Malone, the Shakespeare critic who exposed William-Henry Ireland and his forgeries). Moreover, much of our literary culture is presently preoccupied with forgery and pastiche, which may well make the Irelands available for rediscovery not only as master criminals, but also as pioneering postmodernists. Previously treated as a mere historical curiosity, the time may be ripe to reexamine the forgeries not just as a wonderful story but as a decisive case history in the development of our current respect for antiquity, appreciation of autheticity, and understanding of bardolatry.
