In A Cautious Patriotism, Gerald Sittser examines the issues raised by World War II in light of the reactions they provoked among Catholics, Episcopalians, Lutherans, Unitarians, and members of other Christian denominations. As Sittser demonstrates, religious concerns played a part in the debate over American entry into the war and continued to resurface over issues of mobilization, military chaplaincy, civil rights, the internment of Japanese Americans, Jewish suffering, the dropping of the atomic bomb, and postwar planning. Ultimately, Sittser says, the churches behavior during World War II played a key role in the resurgence they experienced in the wake of the war.

ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS
My friend, mentor, and former professor, Marty E. Marty, the dean of American religious historians and professor at the University of Chicago, first directed my attention to the subject of American religion and World War II. He suggested that I investigate how much serious research had been done on religion and the war. I discovered, much to my surprise and delight, that very little had been done, and nothing done comprehensively He later read the entire manuscript and offered substantial suggestions. Two other Chicago faculty, Jerald Brauer, professor emeritus, and the late Arthur Mann, also offered helpful criticisms. I am deeply grateful to all of them for their investment of time, energy, and expertise. John Yoder and Dale Soden, professors at Whitworth College, read selected chapters and commented insightfully about ways that my argument could be nuanced better.
I also wish to thank the dozens of librarians in the dozens of libraries across the Chicago area that I visited so regularly for what seemed at the time to be decades. They directed me to sources, answered my many questions, and expressed genuine interest in what I was doing. Two librarians at Whitworth College, Gail Fielding and Nancy Bunker, were quick to obtain books, articles, and other sources when I needed them. These bibliophiles transformed my research from an exercise in frustration into a journey of discovery.
