Essays in Twentieth-Century New Mexico History: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Essays in Twentieth-Century New Mexico History" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

While the colonial and territorial periods in New Mexico history have been well documented, and in fact helped create the myth of the American West, the contemporary period remains largely unexamined. This collection of essays remedies that lack by examining the dramatic social, economic, and political changes that have occurred in the course of the twentieth century.Thirteen essays present case studies of farm families, groundwater law, mining, Native American experiences, ranch culture, the role of the military in the states economy, the development of the penitentiary system, organized labor, the tuberculosis industry, public health nurses, tourism, and World War II Japanese internment camps. A bibliographic essay provides additional resources for teachers and students, and a photographic essay illustrates the states diversity.

Acknowledgments
Many people are involved in the compilation of an anthology. In addition to the fourteen contributors to this volume, I would like to give special recognition to John Grassham for his work in compiling and editing the photographs in this volume. I would also like to thank Darlis Miller, Byron Johnson, Cheryl Foote, and Ray Sadler for their comments and suggestions at various stages of the proposal and manuscript. The staff at the Computer Information Resources and Technology (CIRT) Department of the University of New Mexico provided invaluable assistance to a computer novice. Much gratitude is extended to Barbara Guth at UNM Press. And I would like to give a special word of appreciation to my husband, Ray DeMark, for his encouragement throughout not only this process but the long years of graduate school.
