Page xiii Orthographic Notes Since this book is not intended to be a language text, and since is quotes relatively few passages in Dakota, Nakota, or Lakota, the use of diacritics has been kept to a minimum. Only those letters that sound significantly different from English letters have been marked: In wicasa* (man), s* has an "sh" sound; in wicahca* ("real" or mature man), h* is strongly gutturalized; in nagi* (guardian spirit), g* is slighdy gutturalized.
