Preface
Not many serving military officers have the opportunity to reflect broadly on military philosophy and strategy since the mechanics of our business are intensely practical and direct. Our professional model is more like Frederick the Great, who was forever concerned about the shoes of his troops, or Nelson the close-in fighter, than theorists like Clausewitz or Mahan. I was fortunate to spend one year as a student at the Naval War College, in Newport, Rhode Island, and then a second year as Visiting Defense Fellow at Queen's University, Kingston, Canada. That time to study, in the company of a number of exceptional people, led to this book.
