About the Author
Like most of you, Jan Bone has been fascinated by the idea of robots ever since she first heard the term. As a technical writer who has toured a number of industrial sites and laboratories, she has had the chance to see robots in actionfrom the simple pick-and-place robot in a small plastics factory to the giant, full-service workhorses of the automobile assembly lines.
If she were a young person beginning a career, she says, she'd be a manufacturing engineer. Factory automation (and robots are just one component) offers opportunities for those who enjoy high-tech challenges.
Jan's career as a writer, however, spans more than four decades. Ever since her first newspaper job on the Williamsport (Pennsylvania) Sun, she has enjoyed the fast-moving world of deadlines and changing topics. Her writing covers a variety of subjects: from celebrity interviews to human interest features in magazines like Family Circle and Woman's World to technical articles in professional journals like Safety and Health and Hazmat World: The Magazine for Environmental Management. Her 1989 article and photographs about the Soviet agro-industrial complex were published in U.S. and international editions of Food Engineering. She

wrote the "White Paper" for the National Safety Council's Ergonomics Symposium.
She is an associate member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and of two of its divisions: Robotics International (RI), and Computer and Automated Manufacturing (CASA). In addition, she is an associate member of the Institute of Industrial Engineers, and of the American Society for Training and Development.
A prolific free-lance writer, Jan is senior writer for the Chicago Tribune's special advertising sections. Her home computers are linked by modem to the Tribune's mainframe. Through electronic database searching, she can access files from more than 90 national and international newspapers.
From 1977 to 1985, Jan was an elected member of the board of trustees of William Rainey Harper College in Palatine, Illinois, and served as its secretary from 197985. During that time, the college set up a CAD/CAM Center (computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing), sparking Jan's interest in factory automation.
Jan is co-author with Ron Johnson of Understanding the Film (National Textbook Company, 4th edition, 1990) and author of Opportunities in Film, Opportunities in Cable Television, Opportunities in Telecommunications, Opportunities in CAD/CAM, Opportunities in Laser Technology Careers, and Opportunities in Plastics Careers in the VGM Career Horizons series.
Since 1983, she has been listed in Who's Who of American Women. She has won the Chicago Working Newsman's Scholarship, the Illinois Education Association School Bell Award for Best Comprehensive Coverage of Education by dailies under 250,000 circulation, and the American Political Science Association Award for Distinguished Reporting of Public Affairs.
A graduate of Cornell University, Jan earned her M.B.A. degree from Roosevelt University. She has taught adult education

classes in writing for over 20 years and is an instructor in composition at Roosevelt University.
She is married, the mother of four married sons, and grandmother of Emily Diane and Jennifer Marie.
