Acknowledgments
Many people, institutions, and agencies helped make this book a reality. Support for my work over the years came from a number of sources, including the Multidisciplinary Gerontology Center of Iowa, a University House/Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Grant, a Midwest Universities Consortium for International Activities travel grant, a University of Iowa Old Gold Fellowship, and two semester developmental assignments from the University of Iowa. The first semester assignment was to conduct the interviews in the United Kingdom; the more recent semester assignment, in 1996, provided me with a block of time to write the book. Without that period free from other academic responsibilities, the project could not have come to fruition. I would also like to acknowledge the support services provided by the Obermann Center for Advanced Studies at the University of Iowa, where I was housed when I wrote the book. The Center offered me a quiet and congenial place to work without interruption. Particular thanks go to its director, Jay Semel, who knows how to deal well with a bunch of faculty scholars, and to its marvelous and always helpful secretary, Lorna Olson. I also thank the administrations of the Universities of Iowa, Liverpool, and Manchester, Drake University, and Augustana, Coe, and Cornell Colleges for their cooperation.
My collaborators from the liberal arts colleges and comprehensive university, Jean Tompkins of Cornell College, William Ward of Augustana College, and Karen Conner of Drake University, were a pleasure to work with and provided many helpful insights about those institutions. Additionally, a number of graduate research assistants helped in interviewing, computing, and transcribing over the years. Thanks go to Elizabeth Hill, Cynthia Kirk, Mildred Moffett, Mary Willie, Carol Mertens, Sang-In Nam, Jennifer Schmidt, and Lisa Braun for all their hard work. Holly Carver of the University of Iowa

Press provided much encouragement and assistance; I am grateful that she was at the same time both caring and careful of this book and its author. My faithful and efficient secretary in the School of Social Work, Madelyn Bowersox, helped put the final product together, and, as always, I am in her debt for her work and her forbearance.
