PREFACE
It was An Intention of Professor Lawrence H. Leder, who founded the Gipson Institute for Eighteenth-Century Studies, to publish all of the lectures given at the symposia initiated in 1972, but various problems interceded. Three of the essays appeared in Lex et Scientia: The International Journal of Law and Science, and others were published irregularly in offset editions by the Institute. Even these have been difficult to obtain and most are relatively unknown to scholars in the field of eighteenth-century studies.
Several years ago Professor James Saeger, who was then the codirector of the Institute began to develop a plan to bring this volume together. Initially it was intended to coincide with the twentieth anniversary of the Institute and its symposia, but it will now appear closer to the twenty-fifth. The present volume is designed to bring together some of the best of the lectures that have been presented over the yearsthose that retain a scholarly importance and that represent the quality of this ongoing enterprise.
