Writing a book about Penn State football has extra significance for me because I spent four tremendous years working with a great group of people as a student equipment manager for the Nittany Lions. Not only did I get my college degree from Penn State, which was my life-long goal, I also got to be a part of the national championship team in 1982Penn State's first ever in nearly 100 years of existence. No one can ever take away that experience from me, no matter what happens during the rest of my life.
If you're a Penn Stater, you probably already understand my meaning, and I hope this book will give you a little more insight as to what these dedicated players and coaches went through, not only during the memorable 1993 season, but the preparation that went into joining the Big Ten, including the dismal 1992 seasonPenn State's last as an independent. It is a cliche, but the Nittany Lionsfrom head coach Joe Paterno on down had to take a good, long look in the mirror after 1992's 7-5 finish and decide whether they were a team worthy of competing in a conference as traditional and prestigious as the Big Ten.
Anyone who's ever seen Paterno roam the sideline during a Penn State game should know he came away from '92 with an empty feeling. There was genuine concern and the rightful questions of integrity, heart, guts, lack of determination, and the will to win among the entire team were all brought to the surface as the '93 season approached. You don't really have to be a Penn Stater to figure out what an uphill battle the Nittany Lions were facing.
Whether you're a fan of Penn State, Michigan, Ohio State, or any other Big Ten team, or even if you just like college football, regardless of the school or conference it represents, I hope you

will get the same enjoyment out of reading this book that I got in writing it.
A book like this does not write itself. And in a fact-based setting such as college football, the author doesn't play out the season in his mind. There are many groups and individuals who have assisted me in some form or fashion through the course of this book. I owe them many thanks, for without them, none of this would have been possible. They include:
First and foremost, my mother and father, Helen and Milton Richeal, who suffered with me through some tough Penn State losses, but also enjoyed the many victories.
