Preface
In 1990 the University of Oklahoma celebrated its centennial. Celebratory events included academic conferences, ceremonial dinners, exhibits, reunions, dramatic presentations, and fund-raising campaigns. Among all of them, one more than the rest reflected the character and culture of the university on its one hundredth birthday. The university's Centennial Leadership Symposia aimed at academic enrichment for the next generation of Oklahoma leaders. Sponsored by the university's Office of Student Affairs, the Leadership Symposia brought national and state leaders in government, business, the arts and humanities, and education together with student leaders from every nook and cranny of the university's broad curriculum. These students, and the leaders with whom they conversed, shared one quality that cut across the gulfs of age, experience, and outlook that might have otherwise divided them. The generation gap was bridged, at least for a short time, by a common commitment to affect the character of American public life, to lead the country into the next century.
