Foreword:
Something to Remember
This year marks another major milestone in the decade-long evolution of my How to Study Program the reissuance of new editions of the key volumes: How to Study itself, now in a fifth edition; fourth editions of Improve Your Memory, Improve Your Reading, Improve Your Writing, and "Ace" Any Test; and a second edition of Get Organized. (Take Notes, Manage Your Time, and Use Your Computer, though still available, were not revised this year.)
I am truly proud, though somewhat, amazed, that How to Study itself is now well into its second decade. While all authors want to believe their books will last forever, most wind up in the remainder bin far sooner than we would ever like (or admit).

Why are these books the best-selling series of study guides ever published? Why are they still so needed, not only by students but by their parents, who want so badly for them to do well? Because virtually all of the conditions I've been writing and speaking about across the country since 1988 have remained... or gotten worse:
1. Despite modest recent improvements in test scores, U.S. students still score abysmally low compared to many other countries, especially on science and math tests.
2. Most parents, when polled, say improving our public schools is our nation's number one priority. Those same parents do not think public schools are doing a very good job teaching their kids much of anything.
3. Business leaders continue to complain that far too many entry-level job candidates can barely read, write, add, or multiply. Many can't fill out job applications! As a result, businesses are spending billions to teach employees the basic skills everyone agrees they should have learned in school.
It's almost inevitable that these conditions will continue to worsen. This means that the old problems that most affect students' ability to learn overcrowded classrooms, lack of resources (especially computers and other new technologies), lack of qualified, teachers will continue to frustrate students who want to learn but need help.
As a result, the need for the books in my How to Study Program will, unfortunately, continue, since they offer exactly the help most students need and their parents demand.
