Introduction
You Can Get There from Here
Nearly a decade ago, I wrote a book titled 101 Great Answers to the Toughest Interview Questions. I hadn't been a great interviewee. Far from itI had often not gotten jobs for which I was eminently qualified. So I spent quite a lot of time learning all the mistakes interviewees make, having made each one of themtwice.
Despite my sterling reputation with employment offices, the book became a bestseller. In fact, it continues to sell, year after year. I don't pretend to know why it has done as well as it has, but I will hazard a guess: It's simple, straightforward, practical, and written in a welcoming and humorous style. (Okay, I suppose that counts as four and a half guesses.)
And it has clearly helped literally hundreds of thousands of candidates prepare for you.
More than all of my interviewing experience in the last decade has been on your side of the tableand because I feel somewhat guilty for telling so many interviewees exactly what

you want to hearI thought it only fair that I help you, the interviewer, do a better job of finding the right candidateswhich comes down to a couple of key, interrelated factors:
1. Asking the right questions, in the right order, of the right candidates.
2. Knowing the responses you want to hear, why you want to hear them, and being able to evaluate and analyze the answers you get.
Although this may sound simple, I think you'll find the next 200 or so pages will teach you some techniques, strategies, tips, and ideas you haven't heard before. At least I hope so.
An Organized Layout to Get You Organized
Chapters 1 to 3 offers a detailed discussion of the work you need to do and the things you need to think about long before that cocky candidate traipses into the room. From writing cogent and effective job descriptions and ads to "buzzing" resumes, from types of interviewers to types of interviews, from how to handle a candidate who shows up an hour late to the "Silent Cal" and the "Verbose Victor." Interviewing may not be 99 percent preparation, but it may well be 50 percent. And after you study the first three chapters, you
