Foreword
Something to Remember
This year marks another major milestone in the near-decade long evolution of my How to Study Programthe addition of two new titles (Get Organized and Use Your Computer) as well as the reissuance of new editions of How to Study (its fourth), Improve Your Writing, Improve Your Reading, Improve Your Memory and "Ace" Any Test (all in third editions). Take Notes and Manage Your Time, both still available in second editions, were not updated this year.
Why are these books the best-selling series of study guides ever published? Why are they still so needed, not only by students but by the parents who want so badly for them to do well?
Because virtually all of the conditions I've been writing and speaking about across the country since 1988 have remained...or gotten worse:
Page 6
1. Despite modest recent improvements in test scoresin 1995, the average on the verbal portion of the SAT rose five points and the math scores improved an average of three pointsU.S. students still score abysmally low compared to many other countries, especially on science and math tests.
2. Most parents, when polled, say improving our public schools is our nation's number one priority. Those same parents do not think public schools are doing a very good job teaching their kids much of anything.
3. Business leaders continue to complain that far too many entry-level job candidates can barely read, write, add or multiply. Many can't fill out job applications! As a result, businesses are spending billions to teach employees the basic skills everyone agrees they should have learned in school.
It's almost inevitable that these conditions will continue to worsen. In just the next four years (i.e., by the year 2000), 7 million kids will enter school, increasing the number of students in U.S. elementary and high schools to more than 50 million. This is an increase that rivals the one caused by the boomer generation.
