Preface

Containing a section on each state and territory, this encyclopedia represents a new way of looking at the American Civil War. Each section begins with an initial overview on that state or territory and then has entries on prominent cities and military establishments such as forts, navy yards, and foundries. Following these are leading politicians (to include all Civil War governors) and other prominent civilians and then important military figures. We have placed some military individuals in the states in which they had the greatest interest and impact or in which they lived the longest, rather than the states in which they were born. The last category is that of key battles within that particular state or territory. Unlike the other categories, which appear alphabetically, the battles are arranged chronologically. Publication limitations necessitate only the more influential individuals and the battles occurring in that particular state or territory.

Although all states and territories are covered, some states have much more material than others, partly because few battles occurred in the North or in the territories. Virginia is the leader. With half of all Civil War battles taking place in the Old Dominion and with prominent leaders such as Generals Winfield Scott, Stonewall Jackson, and Robert E. Lee, it would be difficult not to accord Virginia first place in this regard, but other states such as North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee also have longer sections, as does Ohio, which made a major contribution to the war effort.

In addition to the introduction to each state or territory, the encyclopedia has 612 separate entries and a selective bibliography, all totaling some 360,000 words.
