Preface

The 2004 International Convention for the Control and Management of Ballast Water and Sediment of Ships (the Ballast Water Convention) reached the conditions for entry into force on September 8, 2016, and took effect on September 8, 2017. The entry into force of the Convention will directly promote the market for ballast water management systems, bringing huge business opportunities to production enterprises.

Starting from the composition and working principle of the ship's ballast water management system, this book focuses on the characteristics and working principles of various types of popular ballast water management systems currently in the market, as well as the working principle, structural characteristics, calculation specifications, and calculation methods of simulation of various kinds of key components such as filtration, cleaning and sterilization in the system. The design examples of key components are given. From the perspective of system implementation, this book introduces the implementation method of ballast water management systems in new ship designs and old ship modifications. Starting from the operation management, the working principle of various detection sensors in the system and the control management method of the hardware man-machine interface in the control system are introduced. Finally, from the perspective of system maintenance, the maintenance and management methods of ballast water management systems are introduced, and the maintenance methods of various key components that make up the system are highlighted.

This book is suitable for (1) the personnel in charge of system development and design of ballast water management systems, and (2) the engineers and technicians in the area of system design for shipyards. It is also applicable to the crew members for equipment maintenance and management. In addition, this book can be used as a textbook for graduate students in marine engineering majors to further their professional studies.

The 2004 International Convention on the Control and management of ballast water and sediment of ships (the Ballast Water Convention), which has been in discussion for 12 years, reached the conditions for entry into force on September 8, 2016 and took effect on September 8, 2017. For this matter, the China Classification Society (CCS) released the 2016 Technical bulletin No. 225 the latest technical bulletin. This technical bulletin interprets the Ballast Water Convention, summarizes the latest developments in IMO and the focus on the industry, and provides the latest documents issued by the United States in response to the USCG Ballast Water Act, covering all aspects of new shipbuilding design/construction, existing ship installation equipment/modification, and how to respond to, drawings, Inspection and certification, etc., with tips and suggestions. It provides the latest information and decision-making recommendations for shipowners, shipyard, design units, product manufacturers and other relevant customers.

The entry into force of the Convention directly urges the market for ballast water treatment systems, and large orders are emerging. For example, Qingdao Shuangrui Marine Environmental Engineering Co., Ltd. and Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd signed 13 210,000-load tons of bulk carrier ballast water treatment system contract, with the total contract price of nearly 70 million yuan (Chinese RMB); Wartsila received an order for 44 sets of ballast water treatment systems for 22 bulk carriers built by Yangzhou Guoyu Shipbuilding Co., Ltd., which is the largest single order in the ballast water treatment system market to date; China Ship Jiujiang Technology Research and Development Center signed a supporting contract for container shipsin August 2016 with a large shipping company, winning the first set of ballast water treatment system orders, and then signed a contract of providing the ballast water treatment systems for two 1700 TEU container ships owned by BussShipping, with the China Ship Huangpu WenChong Shipping Co., Ltd. Wuxi Blue Sky Electronics Co., Ltd. has also received the ballast water treatment system supply orders from Bohai Shipbuilding Heavy Industry Co., Ltd and Jiangsu Yangzijiang Group Corporation and other shipyards. The approaching date of entry into force of the Ballast Water Management Convention, as well as this unprecedented wave of orders, heralds a real harvest season for the ballast Water treatment system market.
