My interest in crowdfunding began in 2015. I began my career in investment banking, where I worked on several initial public offerings where young, rapidly-growing companies raised capital from investors to fund their expansion.

Once I left the corporate world, I discovered that even earlier-stage startups were using a new financing innovation called equity crowdfunding to raise capital via the Internet. Over the next few years, I worked with founders on their capital-raising efforts and met with the worlds leading equity crowdfunding platforms and experts. Equity crowdfunding eventually became the subject of my first book.

I soon noticed that some creators preferred rewards crowdfunding, which allowed them to raise money without giving up an ownership stake. It also offered better opportunities for product feedback. Fascinated, I dove in. The book you are now holding grew out of a desire to provide creators with the necessary tools and know-how to succeed.

How did they do it?

Crowdfunding.

Because of their global audiences, crowdfunding juggernauts Kickstarter and Indiegogo have become powerful tools for creators who know how to use them. These platforms allow projects to solicit support from anyone from around the world.

But this wasnt always the case. Successfully launching a product before Kickstarter and Indiegogo hit the scene was extremely difficult.

If I wanted to launch my idea pre-2007, I would have to try to get money from friends and family, or dip into my life savings, or remortgage my house, or find an angel investor (if I got really lucky).

Assuming I found enough start-up capital for the first run of inventory, I would then have to deal with another problem - how to sell it.

Creators had to run the risk of getting stuck with thousands of units collecting dust in their basement until they finally figured out how to sell their new products.
