ISSN: 2630-4856
Editor-in-Chief
Anil B Deolalikar (University of California, Riverside, USA)
This book series will address topics related to some of the biggest challenges facing societies around the world in the 21st century threats such as climate change, food insecurity and malnutrition, energy and water insecurity, pandemics, conflict and violence, growing inequality and poverty, low fertility and depopulation in affluent countries, anemic economic growth and stubbornly high unemployment in much of the developed world, and rising rates of obesity and chronic diseases in developing countries. If unaddressed, these challenges have a real chance of derailing the substantial gains in living standards and quality of life achieved around the world in the last three decades.
The World Scientific Series in Grand Public Policy Challenges of the 21st Century, under the leadership of Professor Anil Deolalikar, a renowned development economist, seeks to fill this gap. It will strive to publish high-quality scientific works, including monographs, edited volumes, references, and handbooks, that address topics related to the grand challenges confronting societies around the world today.

Preface
Hunger and malnutrition have been major global challenges for long. Addressing these challenges is crucial not just for the sake of providing a basic need adequate nourishment to all persons but also because there are ethical, human rights and economic arguments why these are necessary. For instance, reducing undernourishment increases labour productivity and, thus, economic growth. With undernourishment come the health and other costs of addressing the consequences of such undernourishment. However, unlike issues such as the eradication of poverty, addressing the hunger and malnutrition challenges have few fervent politically powerful advocates. The scale of the hunger and malnutrition problems could become even more challenging as global population is expected to cross 9 billion by the middle of this century.
This volume attempts to take stock of hunger and malnutrition challenges in the 21st century. This volume has chapters on thematic issues as well as deep country studies, particularly for the African countries as well as for China and India. It is to be hoped that the papers in this volume will stimulate further interest in applied research on these topics, particularly as the consequences of the evolving challenges of climate change, human conflict and increasing international protectionism, to name just three, take hold.
In putting together this volume, I have benefited much from the advice and support of a number of people. I name the most obvious of these here. The authors of the individual chapters have spared their invaluable time to contribute their excellent research to this volume. To them I am very grateful. I am also very grateful to Anil Deolalikar, the series editor for Grand Public Policy Challenges of the 21st Century (of which this book is a component), for his gracious invitation to contribute this volume to the series and for his unflinching support. Zvi Ruder (Senior Executive Publisher of this series at World Scientific Publishers) was very supportive throughout the process of putting together this volume. I am much obliged to Zvi for this support. Finally, I am obliged to the Arndt-Corden Department of Economics, my home in the Australian National University, for providing me with such a conducive atmosphere for my writing.
