Preface
Urban Ethics Under Conditions of Crisis: Politics, Architecture, Landscape Sustainability and Multidisciplinary Engineering, is a new interdisciplinary book, which targets ethics in relation to designing and developing urban landscapes. The promotion of urban ethics in spatial terms is a scientific endeavor across multiple fields of research and practice. This targets topics of urban transformation as well as different environmental and region-specific architectures.
The grounding conception of this book stems from the observation that urban spaces, which may be designed, developed and managed based on political and other multidisciplinary guiding concepts, may impact occupants wellbeing. In our belief, urban environments are incubators of human senses, feelings and behaviors, in that their futures, structures and design processes relate to scientific, environmental, sociological and political elements. Based on considerations of these elements, built and urban environments may thus, be condemned or celebrated for their design features. Cityscapes impact the daily routines of millions of people and their respective communities. Conscious strategies or unconscious expressions are equally involved in the formation of the immaterial and material urbanity. The latter may describe what the former may abstractly suggest. Formal, but also informal urban architecture condition landscape design and its sustainability. Theoretical approaches as well as engineering techniques co-exist in supporting urban cultures that create an ever-changing mosaic of a time-space palimpsest.
This book includes topically unique chapters, which aim to present critical thinking, in correlation with the evaluation of politics, architecture, landscape sustainability and multidisciplinary engineering. By joining together a diversity of theories, research results and practices, this book aims to connect new and old ideas about fundamental issues relating to architecture and its impacts on user societies. The chapters composing this book are written by researchers and practitioners worldwide and offer not only expert opinions but also hands-on international approaches. Here, the interplay between different topics of this book is elaborated as parallel offering of a platform for joint thinking and exchange of ideas.
We would like to express our special thanks to all the authors of the chapters for their contribution to this volume and we wish to acknowledge the superb assistance that the staff of World Scientific Publishing has provided during the preparation of this publication.
