Political Developments in Contemporary China
Praise for Ian Jeffries China: A Guide to Economic and Political Developments (2006):
This book is highly useful not only to casual China watchers but also to researchers and academics an engrossing guide.
(Marc Lanteigne, International Affairs)
Chinas role in global events today cannot be overestimated.
This book provides a comprehensive and detailed overview of contemporary political developments in China. Key topics covered include: Chinas international relations with its neighbours and with the international community more widely; demographic developments; Taiwan; Macao and Hong Kong, Tibet, Uighurs; human rights, health issues (including bird flu); food contamination and defective goods; and a chronology of political developments, congresses and Central Committee sessions since May 2006; the earthquake of 12 May 2008 and the 2008 Olympic Games.
The book continues and adds to the overview of developments up to May 2006 which were covered in the authors China: A Guide to Economic and Political Developments (2006), and is the companion volume to Economic Developments in Contemporary China: A Guide (2010) both published by Routledge.

Introduction
This book is highly useful not only to casual China watchers but also to researchers and academics Especially interesting was the middle section on political developments and the work of the various government congresses since the early 1990s, which provides an engrossing guide to the political priorities of the National Peoples Congress and other departments, including both domestic and international issues involving East Asia, the United States and elsewhere in the world. Also noteworthy was the section on Chinas emerging open door policies which records Beijings struggles with adapting to a globalized economy, with sections on liberalized trade, engagement with economic institutions, and currency policies, all areas of increasing interest to both analysts and policy communities. Additionally, those interested in the politics of healthcare in China will be especially impressed with the range of topics included [including] the SARS crisis AIDS and avian influenza [Other topics covered include] the transfer of Hong Kong and Macao to Chinese sovereignty the Taiwan question township elections market development, the reform of state enterprises [and] agriculture.
(International Affairs, 2007, vol. 83, no. 2, p. 409)
I was delighted with these generous comments about China: A Guide to Economic and Political Developments (Routledge 2006) by Marc Lanteigne. I can only hope that this companion volume on political developments finds equal favour.
Economic developments are covered in Economic Developments in Contemporary China: A Guide.
