Born in Riga, Solvita boltia studied law at the University of Latvia and worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the 1990s. She was involved in the New Era Party (Jaunais Laiks) from its founding and served in the eighth Saeima. boltia was the minister of justice in the Kalvtis government from 2004 until 2006. From 2006 through 2010, she served in the Saeima as she migrated from the New Era Party to the Unity (Vienotba) Party, from which she was elected to the Saeima in 2010. She was elected the speaker of the Saeima in 2010 (the third woman to hold the post), a post she won again in 2011. She became the head of the Unity Party in 2012, a post she held until 2016. Amid frequent rumors of internal divisions within the party around her leadership and declining popular support, the party elected Andris Piebalgs
