Foreword
Anyone concerned about Northern Ireland its immediate past, present and future should read this book.
I would of course be expected to say as much. It is obviously flattering to have been asked to write an introduction to Mary-Alice Clancys first major work (more will almost certainly follow) on the peace process. A significant product was also presaged by her earlier paper highlighting the crucial role played in securing the power-sharing settlement at Stormont by Mitchell Reiss, the former United States Special Envoy. The young academics meticulous research coupled with an ability to gain access to senior sources at the heart of decision-making in Washington had already marked the author out as someone with something important to say. As, of course, many will have felt, did Sinn Fin President Gerry Adamss subsequent dismissal of her findings.
Those findings about the apparent willingness of the British and Irish Governments to subordinate the integrity of the political process to the quest for peace, and Ambassador Reisss rather more hard-nosed identification of the only terms likely to see the Rev. Ian Paisley make an agreement with Mr Adams subsequently inspired an important radio programme on the same subject by the respected BBC journalist, John Ware.
