This reissue (1996) provides an in-depth analysis of the development of the Chinese university during the twentieth century a period of momentous social, economic, cultural and political change. It brings together reflections on the Chinese university and its role in the two great experiments of modern China: Nationalist efforts to create a modern state as part of capitalist modernisation, and the Communist project of socialist construction under Soviet tutelage. In addition to these two frames of discourse, other models and patterns are examined: for instance, the persistence of cultural patterns, or Maoist revolutionary thought.

Higher education is a multifaceted phenomenon in modern society, combining a variety of institutions and an increasing diversity of students, a range of purposes and functions, and different orientations. The series combines research-based monographs, analyses, and discussions of broader issues and reference books related to all aspects of higher education. It is concerned with policy as well as practice from a global perspective. The series is dedicated to illuminating the reality of higher and postsecondary education in contemporary society.

AIMS AND INTENTIONS
Although there are many informative books about the differing dimensions of Chinese higher education over the twentieth century, there is no general account of the development of the Chinese university during this period of momentous social, economic, cultural, and political change. Such is the situation as far as the English language is concerned, at least. Accordingly, there exists a need for a volume that can bring together reflections on the Chinese university and its role in the two great experiments of modern China: Nationalist efforts to create a modern state under the broad rubric of capitalist modernization, and the Communist project of socialist construction under Soviet tutelage.
