CONTENTS
The original ideas behind this book took shape at a panel session at the Fourth Conference of the Asian Studies of Australia, Melbourne, 1982. The panel was organised by Colin Mackerras. Colins advice and inspiration have guided many of the chapters through various revisions. Thanks are due to all the contributors to that panel and to a similar panel at the Fifth Conference in Adelaide, 1984. Versions of Chapters Three and Six and part of Chapter Four were presented at the Conference New Directions in the Social Sciences and Humanities in China, Adelaide, 1984. Thanks are due to the participants at that conference. Typing and word processing were undertaken by the secretarial staffs of the Politics Department at Adelaide University, the Politics Discipline at Flinders University and the School of Modern Asian Studies, Griffith University. Particular thanks are due to Pauline Mulberry, Rae Tyler and Anne Gabb. I am grateful also to Elizabeth Neil who solved many technological problems in the course of word processing and to Rhett Marlowe who assisted with editorial work.
