The current world population is around 7.6 billion and it is increasing every day. Some people are starting to worry if Earth will be able to support such a huge population in the future. We may be reaching a stage of overpopulation, in which the amount of resources needed to support a population is more than a location can provide.
What is overpopulation?
Resources
People need natural resources to survive. These resources include water, fuel, building supplies, and fertile land for growing food (see pages 2021). We also need space to live. As the world population grows, it puts pressure on the supply of these resources.
Population growth
For a long time, the worlds population increased slowly. In the 1800s, the population shot up and has continued to grow very quickly ever since. At the moment, it is growing by billion people every years. If population growth continues at this rate, there will be around 9.7 billion people on Earth by 2050.
