WHAT IS AN AMPHIBIAN?

Amphibians are a group of animals that are similar to each other in certain ways. Almost all amphibians start their lives in water. They move onto land when they are adults.

Frogs, toads, newts, and salamanders are all examples of amphibians. Whats the difference between a frog and a toad?

Some amphibians make noises to let other amphibians know that they are nearby. Frogs and toads blow air into parts of their throats to make a croaking sound.

Bullfrogs have a low, loud croak. Some people think that it sounds like a cow mooing.

FACT FINDER

The word amphibian means both lives. Amphibians were given this name because they live in water and on land.

HABITAT

Amphibians live in warm habitats because they are cold-blooded. Cold-blooded animals cant control the temperature of their bodies. They are warm if they are in a hot place, and cool if they are in a cold place.

Spotted salamanders stay in the shade under leaves and logs so that they dont get too hot.

FACT FINDER

Some amphibians change the color of their skin as the weather changes! They become darker when its cold and lighter when its hot. This helps them to stay at the right temperature.

All amphibians need to keep their skin moist, so they live in damp areas near lakes and rivers. Most adult amphibians, such as toads, live on land. However, some adult amphibians, such as newts, spend most of their time in water.

Red-eyed tree frogs live in the rainforests of South America. How do red-eyed tree frogs feet help them to climb up trees?

YOUNG

Most amphibian larvae hatch from soft eggs. Female amphibians usually lay their eggs in lakes or rivers because larvae can only breathe underwater.

Toads lay their eggs in long strings.

Frogs lay their eggs in clumps. What is another name for frog eggs?

Cane toads can lay up to 350,000 eggs in one year!

The larvae of some amphibians, such as frogs, look very different from adults. Their bodies slowly change during the stages of their life.

This drawing shows the different stages in a frogs life cycle. Over time, tadpoles (frog larvae) lose their tails and grow legs.

BREATHING

Amphibian larvae can breathe underwater through their gills. As they grow into adults, skin covers their gills and they breathe air with their lungs instead.

This eastern newt has lungs. It has come to the surface to breathe air.

Most amphibians can breathe through their skin if it is wet. If youre going to hold an amphibian, you should get your hands wet first.

The common toad can breathe through its skin and its lungs.

FACT FINDER

Adult lungless salamanders can only breathe through their skin. When they become adults, they lose their gills, but never grow lungs.
