Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution: summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

The French Revolution remains the most examined event, or period, in world history. It was, most historians would argue, the first modern revolution, an event so momentous that it changed the very meaning of the word revolution, from restoration, as in the Glorious Revolution of 1688 in England, to its modern sense of connoting a political and/or social upheaval that marks a decisive break with the past, one that moves a society in a forward, or progressive, direction. No revolution has occurred since 1789 without making reference to this first revolution, and most have been measured against it. One cannot utter the date 1789 without thinking of revolution, and so significant were the changes unleashed in that year that it has come to mark the dividing line between early modern and late modern European history Kings
This second edition of Historical Dictionary of the French Revolution covers its history through a chronology, an introductory essay, and an extensive bibliography. The dictionary section has over 400 cross-referenced entries on the causes and origins; the roles of significant persons; crucial events and turning points; important institutions and organizations; and the economic, social, and intellectual factors involved in the event that gave birth to the Declaration of the Rights of Man and Citizen. This book is an excellent access point for students, researchers, and anyone wanting to know more about this period.

ABOUKIR BAY

Aboukir Bay was the site of three battles during the Egyptian Campaign, the most decisive of which was Admiral Horatio Nelsons scuttling of the French fleet in early August 1799. One week earlier, however, a substantial Turkish force landed at Aboukir Bay, only to be routed by a smaller French contingent under the command of Napoleon Bonaparte. With this victory Napoleon secured French control of Egypt, but on 1 August Nelsons fleet, which had been searching for the French ships for some months, found them anchored inside the shoals of Aboukir Bay. The French expected that Nelson would launch his attack the following morning, but instead he attacked at dusk, and by midnight the entire French squadron had been destroyed. The French commander, Admiral Francis-Paul Brueys, went down with his flagship. Napoleons army was now effectively trapped in Egypt. Napoleon himself would make his way back to France toward the end of August, turning command of the army over to Jean-Baptiste Klber. The third engagement at Aboukir came on 22 March 1801, when a British expeditionary force of 18,000 men landed at the bay, once again at night, secured its position, and then began a march toward Alexandria. This established a British presence on Egyptian territory, which they would not relinquish until the departure of the entire French army in the fall of 1801.
