Guide
A book of this kind involves contributions from many people. We must first acknowledge the ESRC Cities programme and its then Director, Duncan McLennan, for providing a funding contribution to allow us to hold a seminar to develop this book in April 1999. Then we have to thank all those who participated in the seminar in such a stimulating and lively way. We also acknowledge the efforts of all the authors to comply with our continual questions and requests for developing and adjusting the content of the book, so that it seemed to us to fit together reasonably well. We also owe a big debt of thanks to the CREUE Secretary, Yasmin Ibrahim, skilled organiser of Seminar events and careful producer of quality book texts. Without her skills, we would always be lost. Acknowledgements should also be made to Segal Quince Wicksteed, Cambridge, for permission to use Figure 10.2 taken from their report on Regional Development: Can RDAS Make a Difference (1998); and to the publishers of Futura, for permission to use Figure 3.2, taken from Healey, de Magalhes et al. 1999.
