Foreword
In this book it is frequently mentioned that the content of identity might change over time. The "Afrikaner identities" described here should be seen in that perspective. These descriptions of identity reflect, at the most, social reality as perceived by the people interviewed during the period 1982-85. The data reported here should thus be regarded as a fragment of history from that period. It is conceivable that the ideas of the respondents regarding their identities might have changed since, with the intensified intergroup conflict in South Africa; that the lack of group formation amongst dissidents might have been a reflection of a time prior to the founding of multiracial, anti-apartheid organizations; that the confidence of
