"I don't even know your name," Caleb murmured huskily.
Kate stirred restlessly in his arms, then hesitated. "Cathy," she breathed. Her hands pulled his shirt loose from his trousers, her fingers quickly freeing the studs, and slid beneath the fabric, moving with slow sensuality through the light hair on his chest. "Call me Cathy, Captain."
He gasped as her fingers dipped lower, following the dwindling trail of hair downward across his flat stomach. "I'm not a captain tonight, lovely Cathy," he insisted. "Just a man named Caleb."
She swayed against him. "Love me then, Caleb," she urged. "Teach me."

Prologue
San Fransisco Bay December 1851
The young woman's forceful grip on the arms of the chair made her knuckles white and her lovely face was frozen as she fought the pain. Her pregnant body was as still as that of a marble statue as she tensed. Her face had gone from a healthy pink to a ghastly white in the space of a breath.
Only she wasn't breathing, Captain Caleb Innes realized.
"Lacy?"
The contraction passed, and Lacy Phalen Paradise let out her breath in a long drawn-out sigh. "Oh, dear," she said softly. "I'm afraid it wasn't very bright of me to come out here today."

They sat on the quarterdeck of the Puritan Paramour, one of the tall-masted clippers that made up the fleet of Lacy's father's Puritan Shipping Line. The golden-haired woman and the young captain. Two old friends catching up on old times. Or they had been until the present intruded again. And quite dramatically, Caleb thought.
Lacy was as lovely as his memory had painted her. But she was no longer the girl he had grown up with, the girl he had once loved. She was now the wife of Benjamin Paradise, a gambler. She was the mother of a darling toddler, Benjamin Phalen Paradise, fondly called Phael to distinguish him from his father.
Little Phael now balanced unsteadily on his toes, his chubby hands between Caleb's. Fat, bowed little legs peeped from beneath his baby dress. Unaware that anything had occurred, the little boy grinned widely, pleased to be standing, and uttered a shrill cry of excitement. He bounced, lost his grip on the captain's hands, and sat back on the deck with a plop.
Caleb scooped the child up and studied Lacy's face to see that she was all right.
His dark uniform jacket hung open letting the wind whip at his snowy-white shirt as if it were a sail. The breeze lifted his blue-black hair over his brow, playfully tossing it in wild disorder.
Lacy took another deep breath. "I'll be fine, Caleb," she said as she looked at his worried face.
He wasn't convinced. "It's the baby, isn't it?"
Finding their attention diverted away from him, little Phael set up a howl.

Lacy reached for him. "Hush, sweetheart. Mama's here." Her eyes met Caleb's. "Yes, the pains started this morning." she admitted reluctantly. "I didn't want anyone to know. Besides, I was in labor almost two days with Phael." She paused a moment as she straightened Phael's clothing. When she spoke again, Lacy's voice was full of longing. "I did so want to come out.''
Innes ran a hand through his hair. "Damn!"
Lacy stroked her son's curling dark hair, so like his father's. "Really, Caleb, I'll be fine."
He searched her face for signssigns that told him what? He could read the message of his filling sails, could steer by the stars. But what did he know of the trials of birth? How could he care for Lacy? She appeared to be at ease once more, and Phael stirred in her arms, sucking his thumb.
Another grimace twisted her face. This time Lacy's hand went to her swollen stomach. "Goodness," she breathed at last. "That was a strong one. And so soon."
Innes was on his feet. His voice rang with a command as he hailed members of his crew. The men scrambled to the foot of the ladder leading to the quarterdeck. Caleb retrieved the squirming baby from Lacy. She let the little boy go without a word, her face almost white now.
