This book is dedicated to my mom and dad, who taught me not only to wish on a star, but also how to reach for one; and to Kathy Churay, who helped me transform these Principles from wishes and dreams into my own realized Hearts Desire. May I one day be able to repay you all for your generosity and support.
ACKNOWLEDGMENTS
I would like to thank my husband and partner, Patrick Tully, for so lovingly creating with me all that our hearts have desired, beginning with his work in designing the first Hearts Desire workshops in 1980. It was his focus and belief in these principles that allowed this work to evolve into a book.
To my children, who demonstrate daily the belief in dreams, magic, and the magnificent healing power of love.
To my parents, who live these principles without hesitation and opened up the world of possibility to me from the very beginning of my journey.
To my dear friend and mentor, Julia Cameron, for helping me find my voice. Without her, neither of my books would exist.
To the rest of my spiritual familymy sister, Cuky Harvey, LuAnn Glatzmaier, Joan Smith, Shenoa Grace, Wendy Taylor, and Bill Mondifor sharing my visions, believing in these principles, and lighting my way when I became lost in doubt.
To Susan Schulman, my terrific agent, who spirited this work into the right hands.
To Gail Seminara-Mandel and Howard Mandel at Transitions Bookplace, for their unflagging confidence in my work and for giving it a royal introduction to readers in Chicago.
To those at Crown and Clarkson Potter who have believed in me, and have taken these principles and carefully and lovingly crafted them into this solid work. To Chip Gibson, my publisher at Three Rivers Press, for believing in this project and giving it the power for realization. To Carol Southern, my brilliant and grounded editor. To Camille Smith for attending to the details, and Jane Treuhaft for surrounding this work with beauty. To Amy Zelvin, my publicist, for paving its way into the world, and to Joy Sikorski for overseeing it to the end.
And to Amber Arnett, my assistant, for suffering through the trials, celebrating the victories, and balancing me in the process. You are a saint.
Together you magnificently embody the universal principles at their best.
My final thanks pours out to all my clients, whose adventures have taught me so much, and who serve as the best of teachers to me.
To Dr. Trenton Tully, Charlie Goodman, and all my spiritual helpers, I thank you from the bottom of my heart.
CONTENTS
Dear Readers,
Ours is an age when many of us feel out of control, victimized by the velocity and direction of modern life. Too much seems to be happening to us that is not of our own making. We are swept along, buffeted and bruised by the velocity of world events. Many of us long for a life that is more handmade, perhaps simpler but certainly more personal, more satisfying than the life we seem to be leading by default.
I want more of what I want in my lifeand less of everything else, we say, but we do not know how to effect this change. This is where the work of Sonia Choquette comes in.
All too often we are told that we should lead lives that are more spiritual and yet are also more fulfilled in worldly terms. Frankly, we would love toif someone would just tell us how. What we want and need is nuts-and-bolts information on how to build such a life. We dont just need the vision of the life we could and should have. We want the actual feast, not the images and picture and descriptions of it. What we wantand what we deserveis the actual recipe.
Sonia Choquette is not only a master spiritual teacher, she is a teacher who shares her recipe for living in a series of clear, simple, doable steps. Not for her the grand, highbrow, and elusive evocation of how wonderful it could be if we would just somehow get spiritual. Instead, Choqette brings spirituality into practice. This means she gets practical. She gets nuts-and-bolts. She gets nitty-gritty. She doesnt just tell us to do something. She tells us exactly how to do it.
The book market is flooded with spiritual self-help books that are not particularly helpful. They promise to tell us how to function in seven simple laws or twenty-one wizardly ways, but when we look at the laws or ways closely, they are difficult to integrate into life as we know it. Meditate an hour a day. Sure, if you find me that hour.
Choquette gives spiritual direction in bite-size chunks. Married, the mother of two, a full-time writer, spiritual teacher, and practicing intuitive, she has had to learn the art and the skills of time management for modern life. Her books teach what she herself has had to learn: how to do a fulfilling life somewhere in the middle of the life youve actually got.
