I dedicate this book to my mother, Sonia Polixenia, who taught me the power of prayer.
Contents
I have prayed for as long as I can remember.
As a very young child, I prayed to my guardian angel, to Jesus, and to the all-loving and ever-present Holy Mother-Father God and asked for love and protection for myself and for my family. As a teenager, I added prayers to keep me grounded and safe... and to help me find a boyfriend. As a young woman just starting out in life, I included prayers for security, prayers for lessening my loneliness and fears, and prayers for financial support to help me pay my bills.
In my work, I began to pray for the health and well-being of my clients and students, and for the alleviation of their worries and concerns.
Once I got married and became a mother, I added prayers for my children, my husband, and my husbands family, as well as for help with all the problems and decisions we faced as a family. All my life Ive also prayed for my friends and for people in need.
The reasons for prayer only grew as I grew. At the same time, the number of prayers answered also grew. As a result, I cannot imagine my life without prayer. It would be like trying to survive without oxygen. Prayer sustains my soul and comforts my anxious mind. And like oxygen, I cant live without it.
Prayer takes you out of your ego-based fears and returns you to your heart, where you feel love and support. It invites you to give up control and surrender all worries and concerns to a higher power. It gives you a break and takes the pressure off being human.
Most of all, prayer reminds us that we are never alone and can always count on receiving Gods help if we ask for it. Prayer strengthens us with the confidence and courage we need to quiet our fears, follow our intuition, lead with our heart, and trust that all will be okay.
Praying has brought me so much relief, guidance, support, and comfort over the years that Ive filled countless journals with my personal prayers. Every time I go back and reread those prayers, I am amazed by the ways in which theyve all been answered.
Praying, for me, is an ongoing, very intimate conversation with my loving Creator. It is a time for me to share my fears, worries, pain, and hurt, and ask for Gods assistance to get through whatever I am facing. It is a time to open my heart and place my faith in something greater than my limitations. It enables me to remain strong, clear, and loving no matter what is before me.
Prayer is also a time for celebration. I pray every day in gratitude for the experiences of that day. I say thanks for all the opportunities and blessings Ive been given, and for all the help I wasnt even aware I was receiving.
Prayer When in Dire Need
Several years ago, I underwent a particularly challenging time, facingonly six weeks apartthe unexpected deaths of my brother and my father. And then, my marriage of 30 years imploded.
Bereft and filled with grief and anger, I got down on my knees and prayed for healing, as no other effort brought relief. What followed in answer to my prayers was the unexpected, intuitive guidance to walkalonethe legendary Camino de Santiago, an 800-kilometer (500-mile) ancient pilgrimage over the Pyrenees and across Spain, which I did. I shared this experience in my book
