Julian of Norwich: Revelations of Divine Love and The Motherhood of God (Library of Medieval Women): summary, description and annotation

We offer to read an annotation, description, summary or preface (depends on what the author of the book "Julian of Norwich: Revelations of Divine Love and The Motherhood of God (Library of Medieval Women)" wrote himself). If you haven't found the necessary information about the book — write in the comments, we will try to find it.

Despite the strange and distant nature of her life and subject-matter, the works of Julian of Norwich remain immediate and compelling. Her Revelationsare recorded in two versions: the short text, or `first edition, written near the time; and the better-known second version, which is both longer and more complex, completed some twenty years later. The short text, offering personal details edited out in her `second edition, but which allow a better sense of Julian as a person, is presented here in translation. It includes also those chapters from the long text that describe Julians doctrine of the Motherhood of God. The volume also contains an introduction, placing Julian in the larger context of the fourteenth-century English mystical tradition, and an Interpretative Essay. I>FRANCES BEERis Professor of English at York University, Toronto.

Preface
Julian of Norwich would be deemed an extraordinary figure at any time. As the pre-eminent woman writer of the Middle English period, she is all the more remarkable, and considerable attention has justly been paid to her Revelations of Divine Love in recent years. The Revelations, in which she describes and discusses a sequence of mystical visions, exists in two quite different versions, the short and the long text, composed some twenty years apart. Existing translations and scholarly attention have both tended to focus on the later version, much the longer and more complex of the two, while the earlier version has not been accorded the attention it deserves as an independent composition. Not only does the short text, set down soon after her dramatic visionary experiences, record them in more immediate and personal detail, but its structure is clear and balanced, making the account more accessible and, it could be argued, more successful as a literary achievement. Certainly the short text is the only feasible introduction to Julian studies, whether for the undergraduate student or the interested lay reader. For such reasons a 'free-standing' scholarly translation of the short text is called for one which gives proper attention to its stature in the 14th-century theological and mystical context, to what it reveals to us of Julian as a person, and to its particular literary value.
