Introduction

The modern world is much simpler and fun. Everything that comes with it is more sophisticated and easier. There is no denying that there is a great distinction between our general lifestyle and that of our forefathers. In the olden days, our forefathers had to use their muscles and manpower in almost everything that they do.

We in the modern world are very lucky to witness the invention of machines, implements and complex technological instruments that makes work easier and convenient. However, no matter how improvement we have seen over the years, we are still trailing our forefathers in several aspects of lifestyle. I can see you are buzzing and itching to know what was better in the ancient days than our so called improved lifestyle.

Obviously, one aspect of life that we always trail is about health. Our fathers had things the hard way but they were fitter than us, their life expectancy better than ours, many diseases and ailments that we see today were not in existence those days and so on and so forth. Day by day, there are discoveries of new viruses and disease due to the way we live our lives. Some of these diseases are very easier to cure others may not even be cured after all.

These problems have made us wonder why our forefathers were free from them and we have discovered that; the only reasonable explanation was that maybe they were simply living lifestyles that were compatible with their genetic framework.

As result of this, professionals have been researching on some past lifestyles by our forefathers that can still be beneficial to us in order to curb these health disorders that comes with the modern lifestyle. We all agree that the best practice is to prevent the problems rather than trying to cure them when they have happened already.

One thing that we have discovered to be very effective in preventing these health disorders is the sauna. Historical evidence provide solid evidence for us to believe without doubt the benefits of sauna. It is one of the practices that keeps on gaining incredible popularity across the globe today. Let us take our time to look at saunas in detail.

Chapter 1
What is sauna?

When we mention the word sauna, two main things readily comes to mind. The first has to deal with a kind of bathing which is believed to be one of the amazing things of the Finnish culture (sauna bath). The second thing that comes to mind is a specially designed small room which is heated to a very high temperature with well-controlled humidity where we can experience wet or dry sauna bath sessions.

These two ideas are all referred to as Sauna, therefore you are not wrong if you keep on wondering whether your perception isnt the right one. The sauna bathe uses dry heat from a heat source to induce perspiration as well as where steam is produced through the process of pouring water gently on heated stones.

In this modern world saunas can be used for two main purposes. The first of these is where people simply uses sauna for recreational purposes or relaxation. The other has to deal with therapeutic purposes where a health professional has recommended to a client, to engage in the practice in order to acquire some health benefits.

Most saunas are built with woods that poses excellent aroma, which releases pleasing aroma when practicing. Saunas can be described as either dry or wet. The wet ones are always described as steam rooms which usually keep temperatures lower as compared to dry saunas. The standard temperature for wet saunas is between 37 o C 46 o C. This is done in order to avoid superheated water from scalding your skin when contact is made.

Under the dry counterparts, temperatures are kept at very high temperatures of up to 120 o C. This is usually achieved by keeping the ambient moisture down to zero. Today saunas have seen massive improvements in terms of their accessories. Many saunas use electric heaters as compared to the two olden days where they had to use firewood.

One unique thing very common to sauna of today and that of our fathers is that they are all made up of rocks which releases a burst of steam when they are splashed with water. Now that we fully understand the meaning of the concept sauna, let us take our time to look at how it came about.

Brief history of sauna

You will be marveled to discover that the sauna bath has been in existence for centuries. It is believed to come from Finland and later had to spread to different parts across the globe. The Sauna is very integral to the Finnish, it is believed that they use it to clean their spirit (soul) as well as the physical body. This movement is also key to the social environment of the Finnish people.

Even though saunas are believed to have been established by the Finnish, the exact time when they began this practice is unknown because Anthropologists knew very little of the Finnish and their way of life before the middle ages which makes it almost impossible to state the exact date of the practice.

Many researchers and archaeologists believes that when the Finnish were nomadic, they used portable sweat lodges which were used as a tool for spiritual and mental purification. It is known that the early versions of sauna were pits with fireplaces that were dug in slopes in the ground and were being used primarily for dwelling during the season of winter.

Before the early 16 th century the practice of sauna baths were not recorded because they were being overshadowed by the Russian and Swedish higher cultural influence. It began to gain popularity when it began to have some spiritual significance among the Finns. People were using it for their rite of passage, the spirit of women were purified in saunas during the process of marriage. Many people so it a spiritually safer place to give birth and older people will simply dragged themselves inside the sauna to die.
